My budding demigod was just slain after being ambushed in the mountains by bandits. I knew the mountains protected you from bogeymen, but I only hoped it kept away the banditos too. Guess not D:

THUS BEGIN THE ADVENTURES OF ASHASH JUGGLEDSNUGGLED.

Okay so how exactly do you all start with the build of your adventurer? do you start as a peasant and work your way up or start as a demigod? usually i start whatever the middle option is but it seems to me that whatever my first quest is i always lose in battle to it, am i doing something wrong or is this just DF? I put points into a fighting style and sometimes armor and have a good stats in the top five str, agi, etc.. I suppose im just complaining really, and looking for any tips. Thanks!

I actually like the super difficult combat with a new adventurer. Try to level up a little first, fight bandits if you can. Most importantly only two people know what happens in a fight and one of you is going to be dead when it's over, you have nothing to lose by fighting like a bitch. In DF most fights last until someone lands a reasonably successful blow and even the fights you win can end your career. Be the first person to draw blood, throw sand in his eyes, kick him in the feet till he falls down and stomp on his weapon hand, if your playing genesis tear off his pecker- do anything you can to get the opening for the kill shot. You'll do that about a hundred times then open a door and get shot in the face be an archer sitting in a corner, it's not fair but the frantic desperation adds a sense of realism.

So i was doing very well, found a lair went in and just destroyed this human in there. then i was walking into a fortress being all nice and accidently held left a bit to long and was killed by a tame giraffe. Such is DF, i suppose ill make another character now, ill just edit this if anything happens other then walk, death, repeat.

Edit Killed a giant tiger that had 4 or 5 corpses in its lair just to die to bogeyman... sigh

Not me, boy. For me it's train, train, train. First train up stats for a few days, maximizing strength and so on. Then become legendary at one skill at a time. Usually it's swimming and ambushing first, then bows, then wrestling, then dodging, etc. Interspersed within this agenda are forays to camps and large towns to slowly find decent armor. And despite all this, I always get killed in the first week, probably because I never accept companions.

I have come to a horrible conclusion about reading.
No one in Dwarf fortress has this skill but Adventurers who pour points into it.
not even the necromancers, who write these things.

So I went on a rampage in a village with my previous adventurer.  Now I've come back and... it's full of necromancers.  Like, I ask people for quests and they say "Go kill this dwarf necromancer, he's in the house to the east".  Or even "Seek and kill this dwarf necromancer [who is standing literally right next to me]".  I'm not sure how they got here.  As far as I can tell when they become aggressive towards me the citizens notice and start fighting them.  I really don't know how this happened.

Maybe they decided to move in because of all the corpses? :P

My death lord dust-huskomancer has finally met his tragic end. He's not dead, being a husk, but he's only got one functional arm and no functional legs, so I'm just leaving him retired in a village. Which is actually possible, even if you're a husk, if you retire before anyone in the village can go hostile on you.

I wonder what would happen if I made another adventurer and went to find him...

Following that, I've learned quite a bit about husk habits if anybody has any questions.

Sand Titan with webs (GAH THEY WORK NOW AND ARE TERRIFYING) that can scratch my brain out through my helm. Been sneaking around lobbing pebbles and corpses at it.

And apparently that can be solved by sneaking up behind it and stabbing it in the head once.

I was experimenting with being a necromancer. Raised an army of 150 undead and went into a market. :D

Carrying around a pair of Titan skulls that I throw at people. I think I'm going to start practicing beating things to death with them.

On their cross-country road trip to kill the fuck out of a bunch of werebeasts, Frater Ghostflame the batman and his intrepid companions decided to take shelter in a fort. Frater boasted of his achievements to the law-giver, in the hopes of impressing a soldier or two into joining his group. Little did he know that this Fort was staffed entirely by peasants and drunk.

They left that night, with their party at the same size as when they arrived.

You're playing as a goddamn batman? Very nice.
