also you can't build in hell this way. like you can enter the build menu but as soon as you leave it the game forgets you set up and name a site and ask you to set up a camp again.

You could possibly build in Hell via digging a hellavator in fortress mode, returning in adventure mode, then exploring far enough to not longer count as on the site.

I mean I did just that ended up being super buggy.
probably have to do something with trying to build in hell under an ocean than building in hell.
probably should test this later when my pc doesn't explode trying to travel around hell and a dwarf fort.
in the dark ages save I cool off from this mess of an attempt at ocean camp by doing a small build project


also survive the Dunk.

Massive amounts of savescumming ensued before I could get this night troll killed. Weird, the last several attempts I'd make it out with a bum hand. :V

Regenned a large world with 550 year history as the 1050 world was missing a few reactions that I realized might be needed. Bows/crossbows can now be made from both branches and logs. In the 1050 world, bow/crossbow components could only be made from branches. On cavern level one this would limit bowyering to fungiwood. Also 1050 worlds have a higher incident of masterwork than shorter histories. For the character that leans toward austerity this is a challenge.

Rolled a new peasant: Imush Dirtclods. As befitting of a dwarf with a hardy constitution, Imush has high recuperation and high disease resistance, and is above average in strength and toughness. There was some early oddness as his starting speed was 0.869 walking. This was a blip since it reverted to the normal 1.000 walking speed after checking sprint speed (which was 2.785).

The RNG gods have blessed his journey as Imush began with a steel battle axe and the fortress warehouse was full of iron. Imush came away with a mail shirt, a breastplate, chain leggings and high boots. He only wore the shirt and the leggings, leaving the breastplate and the boots at the fortress tavern after populating his world map with lairs.

Imush was going to head down to the dwarven highway, but there was a nice ettin nearby, just 2 world map tiles east. On his way there, Imush was waylaid by dingoes. Since he's just starting out, a pack of dingoes is most welcome. Shield and axe move from novice to adequate with this encounter.

The ettin Tura Irolrossu Atup Thruni had left a grape and a raw cave lobster lying outside of his cave. He can't pick up after himself. He takes after his dwarven neighbors. Tura is found 8 levels below the surface next to a mangled bat and a pile of bat vomit. It's better not to know the dining habits of others, but what has been seen cannot be unseen.

Tura moves quickly, but the world gen boost to his strength and speed isn't enough. Imush kills Tura's charge with a quick hack to the lower leg. Imush then outgrapples him before bleeding him out with the improved momentum due to prone. Imush regrets not bringing the silver war hammer for this as he could have gotten more work in and pushed fighter a bit higher than the yield already given.

Imush returns with the grape and the raw cave lobster. He'll keep the grape for when he finds a bucket for brewing. The raw cave lobster however cannot be cooked with any reaction and since it's dead it can't be kept as a pet. Some of this is the fault of the ettin Tura Irolrossu Atup Thruni.

Herpaderp. Also, I science'd up what the different author topics do and placed it on the wiki.

  • Guide: Useless generic writing about a site.
  • Essay: Writing about a single historical event connected to the adventurer.
  • Manual: Render your art forms, science, and necromancy contagious.
  • Chronicle: Multiple chapters about a single site, each listing an event that happened there.
  • Letter: Useless prose with no particular subject, always untitled.
  • Short Story: Useless prose with no particular subject, does get a title at least.
  • Novel: Useless prose with no particular subject, does get a title at least.
  • Play: Useless prose with no particular subject, does get a title at least.
  • Musical Composition: Write a new song for a form of music you know. Unlike normal composing, you don't get to control which music style you use.
  • Choreography: Write a new dance for a form of choreography you know. Unlike normal composing, you don't get to control which dance style you use.

And in addition, options to write down an individual song or dance (instead of a complete form of music or dance) are listed below all those options.

Biography: like it says on the tin, seems to be about people you know or have read about.
Autobiography: see above, but for you, mixes in random awesome stuff like big kills with the time you crafted a masterful helve in the middle of nowhere.
Geneology: family tree stuff, never had anything noticeable.
History: derp
Cultural History: also derp
Alternate History: well shit, that's actually an interesting type of topic! What if the event of someyear had played out differently, how would someone have reacted?
Encyclopedia: like an autobiography mixed with random stuff about sites/people you know/things you killed.
Star Chart: useless fluff atm.

On the other side, it may not be common knowledge yet, but I know I was frequently frustrated with story telling options at first.

Person or Creature: you know them by name, and generally have talked to them directly.
Site: goldmine, if you know where you did something you can tell a whole crowd about it at once, the time you killed a roc in some lair, the time you punched a zombie dragon to death in a hamlet. Generally this is the only way to get zombie kills listed in your bring up rumor list as more than "you attacked" entries.
Group: Can be useful, a lot of it is available under sites, but it is handy if you're trying to track down a specific member of a group sometimes.
Region: Similar to site, best for stuff where you weren't in a site and got jumped by a zombie giant polar bear and wanted to tell others about it, check your events map to find the region, then the zombie fight will be in there. Climbing mountains is also under this heading.

Derp? No, none of those are options in the write menu. Are you making suggestions, giving alternate interpretations of the wildly--unhelpful write menu names, or just making crap up? >_>

What Max said™. The more books you read, the more subjects you can write about.

One entry missing is writing about sci/tech. Read enough books on levers, cameras, water wheels, etc and the sci/tech option also comes up.

I pretty much gave up on all performance arts once I realized you really didn't have much control over the product. Writing quality is a function of your character's personality traits: if you want clever writing, you need humor; if you want well compiled info, you need to be orderly, etc.

Aside from that, book writing, while it draws nicely on traits and on some experience (you write what you've read, and somewhat what you know), writing doesn't offer a good deal on immersion/roleplay as it's not interactive. For example, I always wanted a clothier to write about clothesmaking or a soldier (specifically subject-wise) about fighting.

Storytelling is the best one, though dances where you gotta chase the X are still fun.

Music is just roulette. I could be more supportive about playing as a bard if you could play solo tunes.

Well that and if professions weren't always determined by weapon skill.
