Real Time Clock + Mail Daemon
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:02:44 am »

I have the following sugestions for DF

Real Time Clock
Some of us spend all night playing DF in Fullscreen mode, So it would be nice if there was a clock in the corner, possibly with alarm clock functions, that way I don't need to wait until the sun starts burning my eyes to know that it's time to go to bed.

Mail Daemon
How about we nick an idea from nethack. We could link up our email accounts to DF, When we get an email, a friendly daemon(could have an entry on Legends) will spawn on the map. conduct meeting with the outpost manager, and deliver the email. For extra fun he could have building destroyer +2.

I understand the second idea could be difficult because linking those dwarfs to the internet, could result in gremlin invasions. ;)

Well, if Toady really can't think of anything to add to the game anymore, he might want to consider stuff like this when he comes back from holiday. No offense, but AFAIK email programs make their noises just fine when DF runs, and you could just as easily put an alarm clock on the corner of your off-screen desk..

I always liked how MoO3 had a timer that would go off every X min, or at a set time so I could play before work or whatever I had to do. However I think that something popping up every time a "GeT A BiGgEr PeNiS" e-mail slipped past my spam filter would just end up being annoying...

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

The first idea is good.

The latter idea doesn't strike me as what Dwarf Fortress is thematically going for, and I also don't particularly care for the little practical value of it.  It does also strike me as a potential minor nuisance to code.

Plus, #2 isn't necessary when you run windowed at max size.

Neither is #1 for that matter. I run Dwaftherapist and other 3rd party tools, so I don't run in full screen anymore.

An envoy from gety00rfr33viAgrah3ar has arrived!

Er, no. Fullscreen is overrated anyhow.

I honestly think #2 is an adorable idea, especially since I have good spam filters with my email.  But, yeah... what the others brought up are good points.

I got the idea for the clock from moo3 and also if the mail daemon gives you an email about enlarging teh p3nis, why not wash his mouth out with magma

Since DF aims to be a self contained fantasy world simulator, having emails come from nowhere from a magical demon doesn't really fit, and breaks immersion.

But Black and White does it!  How can Black and White be wrong?

Also you can use alt-tab to minimize DF for like a few seconds to check your clock, if you're on Windows.   I'm sure other OSs have this feature.

It's not like your computer ceases to function during DF. There are countless programs out there that will alert you when your email hits (thunderbird, for example can make a blip or have a pop up window that wil break into fullscreen mode) and there are numerous alarm clock/timer programs that are already built.

I'd object strongly to these ideas because not only would it require Toady to do some very complicated programming (the mail demon specifically) but all because you're too lazy/forgetful to alt-tab out every once and awhile?

Well Prague, some of us can get stuck in DF. My dwarves Need me...

Clock yes, Daemon no for the reasons stated by other posters.
a little tool on the side with RL time in any format would be nice, a creature that reads my mail to me sounds a little too much like nethack, and I would have to extinct them by killing exactly 150(IIRC).

I like the immersion factor of losing time. I think a clock on the side would eat FPS (boo) and ruin my immersion.

This reminds me of the time someone suggested Toady add an IM client.
