Traders reminding you of their requests
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:13:22 pm »

Title says all, kinda. At the trade screen, you're reminded of what the other civilization begged for last year. I always wind up making the items, but forgetting to trade them. It'd be nice if I could be reminded "Dwarfs like toys, elves like instruments" and so on.

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

I think you can view trade agreements in the civ screen 'c' in game. But I do like the idea. Would make traders seem slightly more like living beings other than robots if they would just talk for once other than the same line every time... we would like to trade! here take some junk.

Yeah, you can review the current agreements with your trading partners in the civilization screen. Where would that information be placed on the depot/trade screen? Seems like it would crowd the present data a bit? Or would you just want (essentially) a hotkey to the agreements page for the relevant civilization?

Well I didn't know that button existed at all.
Damn it.

A hotkey would still be nice, but I thought you basically had to write it down and remember it. Woops.

You have, because at the moment you need it (when selecting goods to be hauled to the depot) it's gone.

Yeah even it was silly stuff where it was a random phrase that cropped up or something...

Like
Urist McTrader:
My kid really wants a -item-.
Or...
Human Mctrader:
Hmm... we could use some more -items- for the army.

I assume you mean it'd pick the message based on the item type.  Although it'd be hilarious if the kid wanted a battle axe and the army needed mini-forges. :D

Trader happiness going up faster when they receive the items they requested would be a good addition to this.

may be dwarf mini forges work and can be used to fix items on the move?

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

I'm sorry to get sidetracked on this, but this would require Legendary Skill, reforged items are generally useless and/or easily broken.
Creating a strong bond between the two broken edges of a metal object requires higher temperatures and skill than normal.

I'm a complete neophyte on this, but welding the broken bits together is harder than normal forging?
That's the process used in the time period we're looking at, right?

You don't carry a forge in your pocket. End of discussion.

That doesn't mean it's not hard, if you were a craftsman you'd understand.

I guess so; I was just curious about what more specific issues it tended to present, since it could apply to the game.  *shrug*  But it is off-topic.

On topic, this suggestion would be good.  As another way to alleviate the problem, designating items to be kept year-round at a trading depot, and if that's in, specifically marking some jobs for producing trade goods (automatically designating the above on items.)  Having both would be even better.

Actually i am fairly certain the poster is correct, welding the pieces of a broken item together does require more (But not significantly more) heat, as most irons and steels for blades were worked generally at much cooler temperatures than anywhere near their melting points in order to give fine and sharp blades.  As for the skill required, I can only imagine fixing a broken blade by that method would require immense skill with only the most skilled blacksmiths being able to reassemble a straight and functional blade after it being broken.  Hell I have trouble forging an iron ladle that is fairly straight and consistent and it starts off in one piece.
