I know the animals aren't actually immune to lave normally, but I think Darwin would like this thread.

I'll have to look into this at some point. I have nearly 400 animals in my own fortress, but I'm not experiencing any truly heavy lags. It is a shame, though. It's a waste of meat, bones, fat, and leather.

I've been too busy to deal with my animal population for at least a year now.  I know for a fact that I've hit over 50 dogs, cats, and horses, and probably have hit that with cows, as well.

I have just been putting them into cages the instant they are born, and never letting them out.  (The same three cages, as a matter of fact.)

Doing that prevents any real harm to my FPS from being done by the animals, at least.  The absurd amont of random junk like stones, however, are causing problems.

A creature in a cage doesn't seem to take up more of your FPS than a handful of stones do... and I have way more stones and rope reed junk than I have animals.

cages dont take up much power.
and you only need a few animals to breed.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Someone needs to test this with dwarves. If it works, we can create a race of magma-proof superdwarfs, and have them live in a fortress 100% full of magma at all times.

They won't work and then they'll drown.

Is this magma proofing or spinal regeneration?

He needs pets too, after all.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.
