I have a cave map I was tinkering around with last night but it's 128x128x512tall. So we can make a ridiculously tall tower inside it or let me know if I should widen the map a bit and shorten the length.

I vote for a magma cave map

we shall call the great magma lake in the middle pheonix eye, and we shall build a fishing vilage around it

 I think 256 tall and 512 on the lateral fields would be appropriate.

Usually the smaller a map is on the lateral axis, the faster it gets used up. Height beyond 256 is almost always wasted.

So yah, 512x512x256 is the optimal size. Which is 4x bigger than the last maps were.

The one I made was 256x256x128, which left an expansive but semi-claustrophobic feel to all of it. At those dimensions it's about 370 KB without magma, 374 with. From what I hear, the basic server can't handle any maps larger than 1MB (I also hear that the WoM server can, but they're, you know, pretentious assholes, so they keep their server code secret), so 512x512x256 wouldn't be workable.


The only problem with cavern maps that I've found is that the walls are very thin, so you can't, say, build around/below/above the main cavern, for the most part. But then again, that would kind of defeat the purpose which is FUCK YEAH CAVERN!

If anyone's interested, I've got that map up here. However, my internet is absolute shit so a) it will take a fucklong time to join, and b) it will probably lag like fuck all. But it's there, in case anyone wants to see it first hand. :/Fuck that it keeps crashing my system.

Well the cool thing about cavern maps is that there is no "wasted" sky space underground because all of it is the cavern, so even a 64 unit cave would seem fairly tall.

512 512 256 causes server to crash after running omen successfully (already tested), so I will try and scale it down to 512 512 128orsmaller for tonight.

Ahh yeah, that's right. 512x512x128 was the biggest I could get to work back in the day as well.

And if it's all caverns, that's gonna be huuuuuuge!

I just made a 512x512x128 cavern map, and it came to 1.6MB. :/

Flying around it, 256x256x128 seems a decent size, certainly large enough not to end up cluttered for a while. Besides, when it's full up you make a new map, and everything's fine. Staying on one map too long tends to leave people kind of bored, from what I saw with the servers Johbson and Reasonableman ran.

I am so bad at Dwarfiness.  The underground scares the bejesus out of me.  I've barely mined anything, and what IS mined is lit up like daylight from torches everywhere.  I fear the Creeper.  Also Skeleton Archer.

I've got a huge lighthouse project going, though, which is sort of like a mega construction.  I'm firing the stone first so its all smooth.  Also it's on an artificial island.  Also my house is also a light tower.


I want a house with a glass floor in the caverns, in the ceiling above some magma.  Lighting AND pretty.

New cavern map with magma pools as promised.

I made it large but I didn't go mega-large because it will lag slower computers. The server should handle this size fine.

OPs have been wiped! I will be reassigning a few to keep order as our main source of griefing has been OP griefing (oddly enough but they were isolated incidences). At this time please do not OP anyone else. As need occurs I will OP or deOP people. I maintain that the best moderation of the server comes from moderation that is hardly noticeable. OPs, you have my trust so use it well.

For now, current OPs please do not change the spawnpoint. Also, don't mess up the glass landing platform. More server changes will be occurring in the next few nights.
