Games involing the rolling of dice.
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:51:30 pm »

Hello.

I've decided to have a casual look at on of those pen&paper&dice games, not only a video game based on D&D.
Are there any free systems for that, or even one of those play-through books where you ocassionally take choices and roll dice?

Well, Wizards of the Coast had a free version of DnD 3.5e that only contained the basic rules/statistics for the core books, sans fluff and images. Don't know if they still have it available what with the horrendous abomination that is 4e being out now. Maybe they've got one for that now, I haven't looked. It was hard to find, though, do a search for "SRD" on their site, see if anything pops up.

Look at the Eclipse Phase thread in other games, its rulebook was released for free/as legally shareable.

Probably others, but those are the only ones that come to mind.

And of course, there are always unauthorized scans of rulebooks floating around, fairly easy to find if you have the slightest clue where to find such things.

There are various free and mostly free systems.

Tell me what kinda of thing do you want to role play as? Table top role playing is diverse in its genres. There more then just sword and sorcery.

On the WOTC's Dnd site, there's a dice roller you can get for free.

Polyhedral dice are all over the damn place once you're looking for them. You can find good number of sights that will sell tons of dice for nothing, and if you dont live in a small rural town, you probably have gaming store or comic store that also sells the dice.

So we got swords and no magic.

What kind of sword play? Can you give me a movie, comic or book as a reference?

I'd probably advise against DnD then; it tends to fall apart a bit if you chop the magic out.

There are numerous free pen and paper RPG's of various complexity all over the intertubes, just google search for some. I would highly reccomend taking a look at some of the established RPG's though, especially Savage Worlds, i cannot say enough about Savage Worlds, it's a brilliant system.

I think I may be suggesting Wushu for him and possibly GURPS.

But yea, DnD with no magic sorta falls apart.

When I read the title, I figured this would be about dice-games, not pen&paper games that use dice.  You know, gambling and such.

So as long as the subject is up, anyone know some good dice games?  They do involve the rolling of dice after all.

Yahtzee!

Okay, so that was facetious. But I've heard of this nifty game called Zombie Dice that looks kind of fun. It probably wouldn't be hard to adapt the game so you're using regular dice instead of the fancy custom ones with little brains and shotguns printed on them.

Do you want Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon sword play or Kill Bill style? Earl Flyn style? Conan The Barbarian style?
