New Room Type: Guard Post

My royal guards and fortress guards are running all over the place, when they are really needed at a small number of crucial junctions.

A reasonable solution to this problem would be the ability to create a mini-barracks, from a bed or an armory or whatever, that you could assign to one or more specific soldiers or guards. Once assigned to a room designated as a Guard Post, the soldier would spend most of his time in that room, sleeping there, eating and drinking there (if possible), sparring there, and so on. This would keep the guards where they are needed, so that they are not all wandering the statue garden at the edge of your base when they should be monitoring the waters for lizardmen.

An order that would go really well with this would be "Dwarves bring food and water to guards in posts / Guards leave post to eat and drink".

You can already station a unit at a location though; is that not enough?

Stationing isn't enough, because fortress/royal guards can't be given orders like regular soldiers. We could at least have enough control over them to tell them what locations are especially important to guard. And shouldn't the fortress guards be, well, guarding the fortress?

Perhaps a better idea than guard post rooms would be the ability to designate fortress guard hot spots, where they spend the time that they have remaining in the day after they are done getting drunk, adopting kittens, and beating pregnant women until they miscarry.

The Fortress Guard's name is misleading. While they will certainly help out if the fortress is being attacked, their number 1 job is policing the population and dispencing justice.

As for the Royal Guard... I assume their job is to protect nobles. Although right now it seems that they just wander around aimlessly. Maybe instead of wandering around, they could be assigned to certain nobles like wardogs and follow them around and protect them? Or just do that automatticaly.

Edit: I guess they already do! nevermind

The thing is, though, that the whole point of Fortress/Royal guards seems to be that the player doesn't manage them directly the way they do their own military.  Allowing for hotspots or other substitutes for existing military directives would seem redundant.

A better alternative would be to just try and make fortress guards smarter...  have a few position themselves so they can see dwarves who go outside, others guard main entrances or likely sources of attacks, etc.

That might sound difficult to calculate, but really, it could probably be handled pretty easily...  it would make sense to just have a few fortress guards hanging around just in or outside every opening between your fortress and the outside, as well as a few watching your wells, the river, the chasm, and the lava-river.  Then there would be a few more who would wander around looking for trouble; the rest would spend their time training, and would dash out to back the others up when something happens.

Basically, it would be nice if they could manage themselves, rather than having the player micromanage them.
