New building: Fire
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:43:00 pm »

No, seriously. I imagine this will come in with the lighting stuff, but I was thinking this could be useful for thawing out rivers, or maybe defense?

Anyway, it'd be constructed from wood or coal, and when complete have one possible action: Light fire. Maybe a douse fire action too, that would require buckets of water?

It might also be a workshop that's like a furnace or something but which is built to spread light and warmth and nothing else. Once activated a wood burner would start feeding it fuel (with a setting for what to accept, so you could keep it from consuming your valuable coal and/or wooden logs) until you toggled it to off.

It sounds like a good idea, I would want to make an Olympic torch like thing, that burns forever or until my fortress is destroyed by Goblins, the final peasant is cut down while trying to light it. lol

Wouldn't "fireplace" make more sense?

As much as i would like fireplaces/torches, it would be better to wait for some kind of firefighter job to be implemented before letting the crazy little buggers near any kind of open flame.

That wasn't what I was thinking about, but a fireplace is a great idea. I can see every noble wanting one.

Especially if they're engravable, or can be decorated somehow. And then they'll want a ĪTiger FurĪ in front of it, some Dwarven Wine, a pretty female, and some Barry White (Bomrek Volal?) music. Oh, wait. That will have to wait until the music gets implemented.

But to be serious, fireplaces are a must! Especially when light and temperature starts to matter. There would of course have to be stoves too.

Of course, once you have fires then you will need to be able to issue "dump into fire" orders.

Soldier:"Sir, we've got some captured goblins here."
Captain:"Kill it with fir bears."
Soldier:"But, sir, there is no such thing as a fire bear..."
Captain:"We have bears, right?"
Soldier:"...Right..."
Captain:"We have fires, right?"
Soldier:"...Yes..."
Captain:"You do the maths."
Soldier:"... You heard the captain. Dump those bears in the fire!"
Goblins:"Wait, fire bears?"

Bring on the Goblin Holocaust.

code:

# - wall
_ - floor
X - fire
+ - door
g - goblin, of course (or elves, those wood humpers should burn nicely
= - drawbridge
/ - lever

The "Furnace"
##########
##_______#
##_XgXXX_#
_+_XXggX_#
##_XgXgX_#
##_XXgXX_#
##_______#
##########

Fort Entrance (above "Furnace")
##########
##########
/#_=====_#
_+_=====_+
_+_=====_+
##_=====_#
##########
##########

You know you'd build it.

Or have a peasant toss a barrel of strong liquor into the fire while all children are partying around it. The big bang of tantrums..

The fire building would make heat right? would that boil water to make steam? (just imaginging some steam turbines here, nothing to stare at)

Being able to build a 'fire' the same way farm plots and roads are laid out would be nice. Build it in front of your entrance, hook it up to a lever (you'd need a striker, or maybe just a mechanism made out of flint. :P) and when the goblins come: FWOOSH!

This would be a perfect use for flint.  Making fire.
And new wood byproduct: Tinder, aka wood scraps too small to use for anything else = Firewood + Flint = FIRE!

I could imagine this being really useful, especially on freezing maps.  :o

Also... FIRE BEARS. Zomg.... that would make my fortress arena 10x more uber.

This is a great idea, if only because once you have a few I estimate (using science) that your forts could self-destruct at random almost ten times as quickly as before.
