And then we hit some sort of infinitely recursive singularity and the universe collapses
Someday it probably will get to the point where somebody will build a dwarven computer that can run a second copy of Dwarf Fortress.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

I will mod in plastic as a resource.  I will then tweak the Dwarven civ entry so that coins are only made out of plastic, and are called "credit cards".
I will make dwarves purchase things with bushels of credit cards.  It will be a mockery of both systems.
It will be stupid.  But it will be gloriously stupid.

dwarves figure a way to embark into the real world, and all of a sudden there's a giant ass fortress in your backyard, and they are eating your dog.

...Oh my Armok, do you know what this means?! :o
What if we're that second copy? Or another copy of a copy in an infinite nest of copies?

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

It's entirely possible. If the DF dwarves were sentient, do you think they'd have any idea that they're in a game? The concept of reality held by many pepole is quite flawed really, "reality" is just what you can see. So even if the universe was just a computer program on someone's PC, it'd still be "real" because we're sentient beings.

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.
