And then we hit some sort of infinitely recursive singularity and the universe collapses
Someday it probably will get to the point where somebody will build a dwarven computer that can run a second copy of Dwarf Fortress.
...Oh my Armok, do you know what this means?! :o
What if we're that second copy? Or another copy of a copy in an infinite nest of copies?

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

OH GOD IT'S A CONUNDRUM SPIRAL!

Everybody out!

On that note, I've been wondering if anyone's ported game of life into dwarven computing.

This is relevant. Also, if this is the case, I really can't wait till DF 1.0 is out and the appropriate dtil is released along with it.
DF 1.0 will not be out in our lifetime, if ever.

This is truth. It has been too long, and Toady has probably gone insane. It's just we didn't notice, because his is a special strange mood where the dwarf pretends to keep working for the rest of eternity and forces other dwarves to idle while they wait in anticipation.

Which, ironically, is a feature that won't be released until at least next version.

Use magma, it'll fix the loop.  Just hope you don't get a tantrum spiral after that, as those are particularly nasty if your dwarves have invented the internet and games forums.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

Oh god, what have I done?!...
Again?!...
Really, I should just give up on doing anything that could possibly cause things to spiral out of control. Ever. :-\

Don't do it. The chances of accidentally creating a duplicate creature entry is far too great.
