Desktop Dungeons: The 10-minute Roguelike: 1.0 Out on Steam!
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:01:41 am »

Desktop Dungeons is a brand new roguelike, with a smaller scale and short games, but with heaps of strategy and the usual high level of addictiveness.

The monsters don't pursue the player, so it falls on the player to choose their fights. Also, exploring unrevealed areas of the single dungeon regenerates the player's health and mana, so some resource management is a good thing. The catch of the game is that with every victory the game becomes more complex with new monsters, items, classes and dungeons.

I found this game last night and 4 hours and 3 victories later I noticed I should be sleeping. Now I woke up and I will get a win with the Wizard.

Just wanted to note that this game has hit Steam today, and I got my key because I ordered it ages ago.

heres their own page, it has a web browser beta you can play that always has the latest version: http://www.desktopdungeons.net/

and the Steam page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/226620

Here's a download link. Alternate links One and Two Go here instead (v. 0.14 June 16th)
There's a wiki, but it spoils a lot. The Starter's guide is pretty decent though.
Prototype Mac port (Not v.0.14, yet)

this game is REALLY fun! wow havent had so much fun with a roguelike in a while. It is simple, fast, strategic. good stuff.

kinda a cross between minesweeper and crawl. but it is nothing like either.

I'm going pretty strong, I have few more victories under my belt, including the damned Wizard. I even beat the Snake Pit after numerous tries (as a Monk, no less).

Oh yeah, if you ever have the chance to worship Pactmaker right from level one, go for it. The penalty is pretty harsh, but it'll be absolutely worth it later on. Getting to level 2 as a Pacter will be a pain, so don't be afraid to use a potion or two. Though if you come by a fireball glyph early on, you'll have it easy and be almost set to clear the whole dungeon.

Also, I think the attack and health bonus bubbles have a greater effect based on how high the respective stats are, so they're better saved for later. Same seems to go for glyph converting effects.

I got him as a wizard, but all my glyphs were behind lvl 4+ mobs. What does he do?

Wow, considering how little I typically like roguelikes (blasphemy on these boards, I know) this is a heck of a lot of fun. And the ten(ish)-minute dungeons are awesome, mainly because if one doesn't work out (or if you try worshiping a different god and end up cursed), it's not like you lost hours of work.

Two thumbs up.  :)

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Hmm, that's pretty nasty, especially if there isn't enough squishy level 1 Warlocks or something like that nearby. Taking the the most desperate measures possible to get to level 2 is the only chance.

lame.
There's already a prototype Mac port done, and I'd venture a guess Linux can't be that long away.

I'm sure it will run fine under WINE.

Edit: Priests are nasty. I'm two shotting skels a good 3 levels above me.

Very fun game. I am dying a lot, but still fun. I told myself I was going to stop playing about an hour ago... and here I am, still going.

Actually, the earthmother defection/certain other class combo is insane. You pretty much can't die if you use that combo. At least not until your at the end boss.
