A P&P RPG Campaign, what game should it be?
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:46:01 pm »

It's all in the title.  I'm planning on starting an RPG, and I know I have a horrible track record with this kind of thing, but that was all during a weird phase where I'd get super-interested in some other piece of nerd-gaming and couldn't manage to keep myself interested in the old one.  I've stopped browsing /tg/, though, and I've seen just about everything I would actually want to play, so this is the real deal, dawgs.  I'm not sure what to run though, so I'll let you decide.

The choices:

Call of Cthulhu - Play a mere man (Or woman), inexorably drawn into and devoured by the terrible truth of our reality.  Possibly also devoured in a more tangible way, by monsters.  Main problem is that I have no experience in making stories for this style of game, and they may end up being terrible.
Key concepts-
Horror.  Light on rules.  Heavy on RP.  Not much combat.  Bleak.  You will die.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten - Play a mere man (Or woman) fighting to survive in the zombie apocalypse.  Previously attempted to play, ran several test combats, it was awesome, killed by overextending(Wanted to make it open-ended, tried to do too much, couldn't handle the scope of what I wanted to do) and interest in Traveller.
Key concepts-
Horror.  Ultraviolent.  Light on rules.  Semi-heavy on RP, but it's zombies, so feel free to play fast and/or loose with tropes to a reasonable extent.  Lots of combat.   Player-characters will be killed in excessively violent fashion

Rogue Trader - Play the best of the best given free reign and a huge ship to dick around the galaxy in whatever way they please, banging hot eldar chicks and playing with xenos artifacts.  The Imperium will find ways to make you their errand-boy, but things will be interesting.  Chances are several slots will already be taken, as some people
Key concepts-
Grimdark.  Rules-heavy.  Ship-to-ship and personal combat.  D&D-level heavy on RP.  Lots of combat.  Characters are rich and famous.

Other - What would you like to play?  I can obtain most rulebooks, although there is a pretty small range of RPGs I'm interested in/capable of running not horribly.  No WoD.

I have no experience with online P&P, but I'll give any of them a shot. I do like the Rogue Trader and Call of Cthulhu the most, though.

Hmm..kinda torn between Call of Cthulhu and All Flesh Must Be Eaten, but I'm a sucker for zombies, so I'll vote for that.

Well, I already knew about Rogue Trader.  Call of Cthulhu is awesome and all, but I can only hope you've already got a very detailed campaign in mind, and plenty of improvisation to spare.  If you don't think you're up to it, gotta say Rogue Trader.

My vote went for other(see below), my second would probably be the rogue trader one. Depending on how things are done.

As to the other vote. I would like to see a dragonrider type game, from hatching of dragon to final death, a pair fights together. I've been tossing around ideas for a Pern based game like this, but a general dragon and caretaker/rider game could be awesome as well.

Rogue Trader sounds good, although the ^ above characters idea sounds good as well so i'm happy with that if it is chosen as well.

If I did a dragon-riders type thing it'd probably be D&D, I don't do homebrew rulesets.

It looks like Rogue Trader is going to be the winner.  Assuming there isn't a huge upset (I doubt it) should I resurrect the old thread or use this one?

I heard from my sister how warhammer is awesome.
And I'm not talking about 40k.
I'm talking about the *normal* one.

Normal Warhammer never interested me because it's pretty stock fantasy stuff.  40k is something incredible.

Anyway, Call of Cthulhu is neck and neck with Rogue Trader.  I think I can handle a Call of Cthulhu campaign if I really need to.  Either way, this will be my greatest challenge yet.

You just need to read some Stephen King...
I don't know if his stuff is that scary, but he has the reputation that it is.
