Soldiers doing other things than sparring during downtime
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:07:21 pm »

I've read up on various things troops will do during downtime in the new DF update, but what about additional actions for atmosphere's sake? Such as:
  • Meetings of strategy
  • Tending to weapons and gear
  • Talking/bragging about exploits

--Meetings of strategy--
Could just be pointless meetings between squad leaders or whatever for flavour's sake, but could also serve a practical function. Later, when there's more interaction, you could have visiting commanders from other fortresses meet with a commander from your fortress to discuss troop movements, reinforcements, attacks, objectives, etc.

--Tending to weapons and gear--
Sharpening blades, checking for damage, cleaning off blood and other fluids, general maintenance.

--Bragging about exploits--
Sitting down with a good rum, talking about the last battle.

the first two will help slow training down a bit.
maybe the squad leader can change the amount of time thaty get?
bragging is more of a off duty thing.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

As far as I am concerned, sparring could be a bit slower anyway. Less accidents and whatnot.

Also, Strategy meetings could be form of training too. Leadership/Discipline/Teamwork/Tactics skills can be very valuable.

You could make it so that if you make significant changes to the military (change lots of patrol waypoints, squad composition, weapon loadouts, etc.), then the military calls a briefing or meetings of strategy, or both, to brief the troops on the changes. These briefings could have some sort of positive effect on efficiency or whatnot.

Then again, watching valuable dwarves get nothing done while they try to hold/attend meetings can be highly annoying, so we'll probably not want to overdo this either.

As for bragging, that should probably just be integrated into eating or being in the meeting hall or whatever, a mood boost like "he was comforted by a pet recently" or "she talked to a friend recently". Just something successful soldiers (and, thinking about it, other dwarves, too) could do when they felt like it. Perhaps tied to personality modifiers such as modesty.

Perhaps you should get a third option.

You'd have 'Squad is active', 'squad is on drill' and 'squad is standing down'.
Sparring with entire squads was historically not something done in your free time.

That's a good idea.

Agreed. It would give me the ability to have my legendary crossbowdwarfs mingle throughout the fort looking for snatchers while the trainees get some archery range time. With only the two options, my legendaries either spend months doing patrols while the trainees hit the range or are off duty and get to the practice bolts before the trainees do.
