The vast majority of gay people do not feminize themselves this way. The ones that do are just obvious to other people I mean maybe it's just in Wisconsin, or just the people I've met, but yeah. The stereotype is just irritating as shit.

I'm sure that the quotes in the thread title imply that the thread creator knows this isn't representative of most gay people, but wishes to know where the accent came from and why there are large portions of the gay community who do use that accent.

Quite true, that is what I implied    I was also curious where this thread would go once the answer was determined.  Most likely down, after some point, but you never know.

Yeah, I wasn't really replying to that, more the general perception. I've met a lot of people (gay and not, weirdly) that think you have to have a lisp and be obsessed with fashion to be gay, which is both bizzare and irritating to me.

I can't believe I didn't know that word before.  But yeah, there's at least one here in Dallas.  They certainly don't advertise themselves as such, but it's really, really easy to tell.

I have a lot (lot) of gay friends and they range the spectrum from 'soft-spoken sweetheart' to 'studs and chains in public' to 'thug' and even 'wow that is a really unremarkable guy'. I actually can't say I've ever met anyone who actually has the 'gay accent' and all of us will affect it when goofing around.

That said, I remember in my sociology class where we had a text on this subject wherein it said that the 'gay accent' and mannerisms and suchlike were from the gays being an isolated sub-culture and needing to identify themselves with others they were actually similar to. I believe it did not say anything about how that started but that's how/why it perpetuated for so long. And why it appears to be going the way of the classic vampire.

I dunno. They could possibly actually be gay; I don't actually pay it a whole lot of attention. The accent just irritates me.

I have a cousin... Well he might not have "the" accent but he sure wasn't typical.
I really don't know why.

I think he would try to sound even more femine if he could, but his voice doesn't go that high.

That makes sense.

Also, you have to consider that if someone is openly gay, they'll be less concerned (on average) with adhering to typical standards of masculinity, since they've already basically broken out of that mold, so they'll be more likely to adopt mannerisms that would normally be seen as "feminine" relative to people who still have a vested interest in conforming to those standards.

Eh, the gay accent thing pretty much depends on the kind of gay person. I mean, I'm gay, but I believe I speak like any normal person. The only pseudo give-away about me is the fact I don't look manly at all.
I believe some gay guys do it because today's pop culture defines gay males as being that way, with the accent and ridiculous feminine ways. So if you grow up in a culture were gay people wear sparkly clothes and use eyeliner 24 hours a day, then thats what you'll assume that is gay.

So yea, your mileage may vary. Some gay people use it naturally, others don't. I lack one, I don't think I can even fake one properly.

Also: Furries =/= gay people, they just take every sexuality and fetish ever invented and make it worse, much worse. Normal gay people abhor furries like any normal person does >:C

Hm, another question.  Gays, of course, are attracted to the same gender (I use gender instead of sex, so sue me ), but they take on behavior of the opposite gender?  I would figure that gay men would be attracted to especially manly men, and the reverse for women.  And by that logic... do gay men find feminine behavior attractive?
