The "gay" accent
« on: March 13, 2010, 03:17:05 pm »

Where did it come from exactly?  Is there a region or something where everyone has this accent naturally?

I don't think so. I can never tell if it's affected or not, but a fair number of gay dudes actually talk that way. Of course a few straight guys even do too I guess

I thought it was more of a population thing, where gay guys would happen to have a large population in areas where that accent is popular.

Although there is nothing about San Francisco I can tell that would lead to those accents being popular. Perhaps the mildly wealthy just get eccentric about things? I dunno.

I also know a few gay guys who talk completely fabulous.  I don't know why though.

Weren't speech patterns used as a part of "gaydar" in order to find other individuals of similar tastes?  I can't exactly claim to have done a lot of research on the subject, mind you.  I've misplaced my copy of "The History of the Homosexual in America"...

Perhaps we should find an expert on the matter to give their opinion.

I live in a neighborhood composed almost entirely of gay people and none of them talk like the stereotypical gay dude.  Of course, I also live in Texas so you'd probably get shot if someone heard you talking like that.

I don't know where it came from though - maybe black talk-show hosts, who I know some drag-queens like to emulate.

It comes from attempting to feminize the voice. Not all gay people talk like that, because not all gay men, probably most gay men, do not attempt to make themselves more feminine. I knew two gay guys in my high school. One was constantly making himself overly feminine, the other knew kung fu, and I'm not even joking there.

Stereotypes are only true in the sense that they are ever true; on average.

You live in a town of gay texans? Huh.

I knew a guy in middle school who talked like that, long before actually coming out of the closet. That said, he was pretty obviously in denial and last I hear he still is, but uh, yeah.

I don't mean you'd get shot for being gay, I mean you'd get shot for being irritating.  Heck, the other gays would probably shoot you first for talking in that ridiculous accent, for making them look bad.

The vast majority of gay people do not feminize themselves this way. The ones that do are just obvious to other people :P I mean maybe it's just in Wisconsin, or just the people I've met, but yeah. The stereotype is just irritating as shit.

The gay folks I know don't have the accent.  Admittedly I don't know that many, but I've yet to meet one who was so flamingly gay that they felt a need for the accent.

I'm sure that the quotes in the thread title imply that the thread creator knows this isn't representative of most gay people, but wishes to know where the accent came from and why there are large portions of the gay community who do use that accent.
