Turning Off Ocean Waves...

...Can you do it? Or at least stop them?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I don't think you can turn them off, but you should be able to create a breakwater.

How come you want to turn off ocean waves?

If you're trying to stop waves from going up a channel, make an S shaped bend in it to break up the wave.

Hmm, I think I've seen or heard of a way to turn off ocean waves in the init. *checks*

Edit: nm, no option there. I swear I saw something somewhere about turning off the wave animation.

What about a lake embark? No waves, but no saltwater either to make it harder.

You can find saltwater lakes.  They're slightly less common, but they're there.

I need magma and no waves. So yes, a freshwater lake works. But they are very rare. And even more rare with magma.

Tweak the worldgen settings.  Raise volcanic activity (100% will guarantee a pipe on every map tile, but stone selection is limited) and rainfall, and lower drainage and elevation.  Eventually, you should end up with at least a few lakes (not to mention a ton of swamps and marshes...).

You know, unless that FPS is at single digits, maybe you should just read a book or browse the web while the game runs a little... typically, I spend about 3 hours designating orders, and then several hours in a row not doing anything but watching.

My FPS has dipped into the teens, and I still find this game fairly playable even at those speeds.

It's an exploit, but I remember someone saying that designating a stockpile and then removing it will permanently disable waves on the area.

I love the ocean wave effect... I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to use the mist to make my dwarves happy.

I thought ocean mist didn't give happy thoughts?
