Separate tileset for graphics and text
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:16:48 pm »

I really want to enjoy this game.  There's clearly a lot going on, but I find the basic graphics set unacceptable.  It's just too chaotic visually, especially the mix of commas and periods all over the place.

The replacement tilesets solve the problem of the playing field graphics, but they make the informational text incomprehensible.

I'd like to see more graphics options for objects, but I don't think they're necessary to make the meet my minimum standards of presentation.

I do think there needs to be an option to that separates the basic tiles from the text tiles.

Text is only used in certain screen sections, so it would be easy to make decisions about where to use what tileset.  Then, the remaining tiles can be customized to hearts content, without causing presentation problems.

Not to be too snarky, but you're hardly the first person to point this out.

Currently #6 on the Eternal Suggestion list.

You can turn this off in the init.txt file.

I figure this has already been said before, but I wanted to put my two since in because I thinks its the most glaring flaw with the game.

That suggestion list for full graphics support is about adding graphics tiles to everything in the game.

I'm proposing that a simpler fix, that would make the game reasonably playable to non-enthusiast, would be to simply use separate tilesets for 'font' graphics and text.

You can turn this off in the init.txt file.

Touche, I didn't see that, and I will use it indeed.

I still stand by my recommendation, because I think tilesets with ground tiles would make it unneccessary if they didn't affect the menu text.
