Author Topic: Will there be a new graphical tileset released with the new DF2010?  (Read 4282 times)

Seeing as there will be huge numbers of new creatures etc., surely this release will require a new tileset? And unfortunately, not all of us are cool enough to be able to interpret ASCII  :(

I'd urge Toady to work with a few of the most popular graphical artists out there (Mike Mayday?) release tileset information so that a graphical tileset will be available for the new version from the day of release.

(Edit: I removed my graphics vs. ASCII argument because it was detracting from the main point of the thread)

Toady doesn't, as a general rule, work with people. But if it's that big a deal to you, just wait until Mayday's updated version comes out. Seriously, no big deal.

Toady isnt going to make tilesets...ever.

He's going to leave it open for people to change it IF they want, to a graphics set from the ASCII.

The vanila releases will always have ASCII as default.

That's why you shouldn't get used to custom tilesets in a game that's still in alpha version.  :P ;D

I'll gladly take any vote of confidence in my cool-factor, even if it's inacurately directed.

Actually, If I remember the DF talks correctly, toady did talk about enhanced graphics at some point. What that actually entails is all up in the air, but I would guess some sort of enhanced ascii.

If I had to guess, I'd say he's talking about full-3D with animations and ragdoll physics.  I may be wrong.

When I say 'work with' I really just mean release the, what I imagine to be, very small amount of information that would allow people to start making tilesets now, even just a rough list of creatures? I don't know anything at all about tilesets but I'd be willing to attempt to make one if nobody else was.

Yeah, I distinctly remember him saying something about that...

The OP is of course correct that the game would be better with something other then ASCII as it's default graphics set.

Personally, I'm unable to read the tile-sets as easily as the ASCII. My friend who recently started was shown both when I asked him which he'd prefer. He too agreed that the ASCII was easier for him to read. To be honest, it's all a matter of preference.

The OP is of course correct that the game would be more easily accessible to most newcomers with something other then ASCII as it's default graphics set.

Fixed that for you.

As for Toady mentioning improved graphics, I seem to recall something to do with simulating the effect of wind passing through tall grass with ascii. Which inspired someone to make a mock-up which someone else then used as their avatar. You may have seen it. It's green and pretty.

I think this should be locked as it is just another unsolvable "graphics vs ASCII" rant.

In the perfect world, it would be possible to set custom tileset options ingame. Each tileset (including orginal) have a separate folder in your DF folder, and then you could simply tell the game from which folder to load from.

It isn't a rant and that's not even the main point, I was just saying that it would be useful if Toady released some information regarding the tilesets so that people can produce graphical tilesets for this version that will be available from the day it is released for those of us who prefer to play without ASCII.
