immense breakthrough in 3d grafics

the video explains it perfectly

tl;dr these guys actually build grafics out of atoms intsead of polygons, and use a search algorythm that limits the rendering to the ones that you need, i.e only as many as there are pixels on your screen to make it possible for computers to not explode immediatly

I'm impressed. That actually sounds possible. I really hope this is real.

So we may get to the point where we no longer need to upgrade our graphics card, and only have to worry about processor speed. Awsome.

Although I will, at least for a while, wear a welder helmet near my laptop if I ever decide to run something like that on my computer. It sounds almost too good to be true.

Have you guys played Voxelstein 3d?  It's a more limited realization of this kind of stuff, with the voxels being a few inches across relatively.  The cool thing about it is the dismemberment.  If you cut a person with a sword in something like this, it could actually delete/displace voxels it touches, causing dynamic wound effects, rather than simply severing along a cleavage plane the designers put into the model, regardless of where the sword hit.  Similarly, if you shot someone you would be able to see the actual wounds, instead of little decals applied to the model.  It'll be awesome.

And yeah, I guess the level of environment detail is pretty cool too or whatever.

I don't think so. They'll probably run the search aglorythm and actual rendering on the GPU, so the CPU can handle other things (physics, pathfinding etc. like it does now)

The way I see it, once graphics are out of the way, people will concentrate more on straining out the CPU. Games need another measure to set themselves apart. I expect more CPU heavy games in the future.

This is obviously fake. Search Algorithms are CPU and GPU intensive on their own, and his PC was lagging just displaying scenes, what about that in motion?

"Obviously fake"? What do you mean by that? It's a graphics technology...

The reason it was skippy was because he's displaying a prototype and it isn't completely finished yet. If it was finished, I'd have an Unlimited Detail GPU in my computer.

WHY DID YOU HAVE ME KICK THEM WTF I DID NOT WANT TO BE SHOT AT.
I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

He was running it all on the CPU. No wonder it lags.

He said that he was running the program without hardware acceleration, and upon that, I'm not entirely convinced that the lag was real rather than an artifact of the recording.

Screw grafics.
If the quality of gameplay in future games stays the same, I'm not impressed...

If they'd use this on the next Stalker, Half-Life or Men of War I'll probably buy it (assuming my rig can run it)

Going to their website and watching their videos that aren't compressed to youtube standards. There isn't any lag in their tech demos. Their only real issue currently seems to be getting shadows right.
