I wasn't here when Elephants had a problem...

But I am assuming they were pretty much Carniverous Elephants of the Immortals.

What were their real problem?

In the second picture, the look on the leftmost guy's face is scarier than the carp.

Longnose Gars are more dangerous than Carp. In my latest fortress, I have a river full of carp. Just FULL. My dwarves won't even come close to the river.

But the two longnose gar that reside there are the only fish with names...

That is because the Longnose Gar didn't have to share its kills with 100 of its own kinds.

I got longnose gar and pike in my river.  They were peaceful for a long time and I became complacent.  And then, they struck!  First a caravan guard was pulled in...a hammerer.  He fought valiantly but was nibbled to death and suffered a painful watery death.  Then the others struck, next was a fisherman, and before the fisherman stopped struggling one of the miners taking a drink from the river was brutally attacked by gar.  He was pulled in screaming and the river ran red.

The military was mobilized in response.  An axeman and crossbowman.  the crossbowman died first, on his way to his station a fish leaped out of the water dragging him in, he didn't fire a single bolt.  The axeman rushed to his aid and slain the evil fish, however his partner drown in the river, unable to escape due to his wounds.  With the continuing offensive the axeman slew 3 more fish, being pulled in on 2 separate occasions but escaping thanks to the emergency ramp that was built while the fish were distracted.  Then he was overwhelmed by multiple fish and also died a horrible nibbly death.

Then the wholesale death began, people were thirsty.  There was booze, but only one barrel.  If they couldn't get booze they went to the river, where they were grabbed and devoured by the devious aquatics.

It was horrible... I vote for a old nemesis megabeast as well. Careagluniphantder.  Eight legged, flying, fish tailed, one eyed, elephant, horse.  Though that sounds more easter egg potential than anything.  I'm sure the modding community could create such a creature in five minutes.

EDIT: Late night post, pardon the bad grammar. At least I just fixed the spelling.

I just wanted to add I support this idea, and that the name "Bloodcarp" is just too fantastic NOT to use.

Do it do it do it.

Edit: Also, I really like the idea of keeping carp as a total watery doom. In fact carp, or rather the stories of carp keep me from making my fortresses in areas with rivers.

The same thing keeps me making fortresses near rivers.  :)

Carps don't need eyes to see. They are that awesome.

I disagree with the deadlyness of the carp. My adventurers kill them by the tens. Sturgeon are a completely different story. They will rip off your head in mere seconds.

Once, I modded in hellcarp for the fun of it. They were size 10, traveled in groups of 20, were amphibious, and attacked what ever they saw. Their bites dealt HEAT damage.

It was when I tried to kill them with my adventurers that I realized the terror I had bestowed upon that world.

I also modded in hellephants.

Bloodcarp is more awesome than piranas.
Also, de-nerfed elephents called Mastodons, which live in the colder spots.
Mastodons would still be around today if they weren't hunted to death.

Actually, recent evidence suggests that disease was responsible for many post-Ice Age extinctions, such as tuberculosis. Certainly, hunting by Palaeolithic Man would have been a factor, but the rampant onset of disease would have sealed the doom of the Mastodon far quicker (and more permanently) than any amount of hunting would have.

They were on the smallish size, but they were still large - if Elephants are a size 16 in DF, then Mastodons are at least size 12, if not 14. They also had far larger tusks than normal elephants, so that would up their damage quite a bit. And the females (and young males) are widely speculated to have a second pair of tusks on top of that. Of course, doing any actual damage with tusks is rather stupid, as although they can do a lot of damage, they can be rather weak and prone to bending or cracking at the base, which leads to abnormal growth. Mastodon tusks were much straighter, however, so that may had lent them some advantage in using them offensively, as they could manoeuvre them easier into a lance-like position.

Ahem.

Yeah, I'm doing a DF Prehistory mod based around our own early history. It's obvious that I read too much.
