This large beast...



...is despite its look...



...quite harmless.




Finally, I had reached the civilization that I had sought after. Various urns stood in alcoves placed in the walls of this large gate to the city beyond.



But the earns contained nothing but bones...




...and rotten meat.





A fractured tablet lay nearby. I stared at it, and though I didn't understand how, I could read what it said. This had been a city called Mithalas. An entire city, in ruin...

...were there no survivors?





Aggressive beasts nested in the remains of buildings long since forgotten, they did not care about the former splendor this grand metropolis had once had.









Some buildings, however, were still intact and clear of predators.

And sorry. This update should have been done and delivered yesterday.

Spoiler: Chapter 2, Part 2 - Mithalas City (Part 1) (click to show/hide)

As I started exploring the rest of the city, I came upon a song plant. I wonder what useful items I would find inside this one...



...but it seems fate tricked me again, as the plant literally exploded into rotten meat.




Being curious, I tried to cook these together...




...but only managed to concoct a foul, venomous glob that could do no good whatsoever.

((The Poison Loaf is crafted by combining Rotten Meat with anything else, and hurts Naija when eaten. The only use of this thing is to craft another, more beneficent recipe, which won't be used much anyway.))

((Also, for some strange reason, you can make a Posion Loaf by cooking two other Poison Loaves together, in order to reduce the number you have. But why you would do this when you could just toss it away is a mystery I've never figured out.))









These mushrooms induce... strange effects when used as an ingredient in recipes. I'd rather not go into detail.





After fighting my way through the various creatures now inhabiting the city, I stumbled upon a very familiar building.








I was mesmerized, as I realized that what I had just seen, I didn't see with my eyes, but with my memory. I had been here before. A wave of nostalgia washed over my face, as I remembered standing here, as but a child, with who I assumed to be my mother, watching over this pot. Just a few seconds of memory...

...yet it would affect me for the rest of my life.




As I looked around in the building, I remembered an ancient recipe...





((The Tasty Roll is an upgrade to the Hand Roll, and is made by cooking one with Fish Oil. I admit, at this point in the game I haven't actually FOUND a tasty roll from a song plant or other container, but considering who we will face soon, I thought this would be a good spot to introduce it. As we will need it.))









This beast guarded a song plant with fierce vigor. Nonetheless, I subdued it.





Upon the plant's hatching, a small creature emerged, and eyed me with great curiosity. I called out in song...



...and the creature attached itself to my back. At first, my reaction was to blast it with energy, but I was wise to regain my senses and refrain from doing so. I felt invigorated.

At first I didn't notice anything...





But as I retreated from a fight, injured, it occurred to me that the tiny creature was in fact healing my wounds.




The tomes and scriptures in this small library were mostly decayed, and the ones who weren't were unreadable.





((The Hearty Soup is created by cooking Hot Soup with Any Meat, and increases defense in addition to the speed boost.))








These huge jellyfishes were, in fact, harmless, fortunately enough, as my repetitive energy blasts didn't even cause them to flinch.





This building had a small pathway that was far too narrow for me to explore. I couldn't send Nemo as a scout either, as I had no idea to actually communicate with him, except for when to come out and when to stay hidden.







Curious.





In this building, I found another of the regenerating creatures. However, as one was already attached to me, this one had no interest in me. Apparently, I was not able to support them both.



I will admit. At some point, I thought that someone must have put these currents here just to have fun at my expense.







I prepared myself, then headed into the Palace.

The first thing I noticed was that the creature attached to my back abandoned me, scurrying off with great speed, as though frightened of something.









Soon...



I began seeing why it had left with such speed.



The horrific pathway in front of me was composed of flesh and tissue, and looked very much alive.






The twisted, disgusting creatures swam ungainly towards me. In their shallow eyes I saw only a hunger for flesh. With horror, I realized that they resembled the fallen statue that had led me here.







I found a strange, stone disc inside the alive corridor, and promptly made my escape.







The architecture inside this building was beautiful. Such a shame to see it being defiled by these... mutants.









I had glided into the chambers of a former ruler. From what I could gather from a nearby portrait, this room belonged to a young prince of Mithalas. Were these people my ancestors? Or did I merely wish, desperately, to be one of them.





This door prevented access into the building beyond. I would have to find the secret of its opening.







The princess of Mithalas had lived here. I wondered if I'd been her once upon a time. I fancied myself ruling here in ages past, with a faithful prince at my side.



In any case, no creatures, and thankfully no mutants, had wandered into this room, as though it was hallowed from all evil. I decided to spend the night here, in this royal bed.
