Potential for flooding the world...
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:27:03 pm »

So I have been playing DF for a few months now, having lots of fun, when i stumble upon this unusual geographic feature - an underground stream that appears out of a hillside near the edge of my map, and proceeds to jut out of said hillside atop some kind of natural silty loam aqueduct a few z-levels above a valley floor, before dissapearing off the northen edge of my map.

In my limited experience, this seems rather unusual... anyone else come across something like this, or is it actually quite odd?

Of course, some kind of "flood the lower part of the world" fun causing mechanism to remove elven traders is in construction. bye bye framerate.

I've had something like this once before (though a few tiles shorter) and I thought it was awesome, though I didn't save it. But it had a natural hidden cave behind the waterfall bit, which was really cool too. The sheer length of this one might make it unique, though - I imagine you'll be getting lots of worldgen info / seed requests.

Use the export local image feature and a text file with the parameters will be made.

I think so. And a pic of your fort's location in the world would be useful as well.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Genning now, can't wait to see what this looks like in Visual Fortress.

Also going to try embarking on the whole region tile and see how far it stretches.

Hm, generated a very similar looking world but not quite the same. Are you running any mods?

EDIT - Nevermind, it was me, I had adjusted some of the megabeasts and forgot about it.

Got it generated, here's what the formation looks like in Visual Fortress:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Most interesting part, the water doesn't cascade down from the upper level into that walled area, but actually teleports to the bottom area (or possibly the other way around, I have trouble telling where the water enters from).

There's also a nice natural cave that goes underneath the water source a little ways.

Good find!

Thank you. Now all I feel I need to get my head around is why its there... assuming there is an explanation.

Presumably Armok molded the land like that because he wants you to flood the world and rid it of elves. I say do it.

If it was Armok, it would be a magma river.

Have you submitted a bug report yet?  I'm pretty sure that Toady would be rather keen on taking a look at this himself.
