What does it do?

Well, given what you have, there's one kind of trap I can see you make now and another that'll need one more item that's available.  You need to be a Skilled mechanic or better to do it.

Stone Trap: one shot chance of killing an elephant.  25% chance of the elephant dying.  25% chance if it working but not killing.  50% chance of the elephant just not going in it (it'll still be around in that case).  uses 1 stone and 1 mechanism

Cage Trap: 50% chance of trapping the elephant (otherwise, the elephant went around it so it's still available).  Once trapped the elephant can ONLY get out if someone lets it out (and all dwarf actions are public so no "OMG THE ELEPHANT IS LOOOOSE" bastardry).  You can bring the cage inside and have it on display or whatever.   Requires 1 cage and 1 mechanism.

Org. Our chances of hitting the elephant are the same even with the stonefall trap, but the trap has a very decent chance to fuck over LyLo when some scumbucket throws open the cage and kills everybody involved.
