Na'Vi and Humans are Elves vs Dwarves
« on: March 07, 2010, 11:01:23 pm »

The Na'vi are expert and deadly archers, have a deep and emphatically spiritual connection with their natural surroundings, are not prone to rowdiness (but will become very pissed at anyone taking liberties with their environment), and are distinguishable by their slender forms and pointed ears. The Humans, meanwhile, are fond of high-impact, low-skill weaponry, are master craftsmen, builders, and inventors (epitomized by their home, a vast, multi-layered hive carved from inorganic substance and lacking much natural light or vegetation), express themselves with a combo of gung-ho emotion and gritty determination, and are considerably shorter and stockier than their counterparts. Elves Vs Dwarves, anyone?

Taken from the trope page itself.

Who then do we ally ourselves with?

Except that Na'vi are hot, and elves are not, so we can suffer their existance.

Being similar doesn't make them the same.

The problem with James Cameron is that he takes an almost spiritual connection with nature that the White Man shows is not necessary for everyday life. It is a fragile bond that Elves choose to preserve. The Sioux, however, are literally connected with their nature through USB biosystems. It isn't anything mystical or honorable, it is just a biological system.

I never liked the Na'vi. It's a race of Mary-Sues.

All things can be compared to all other things.  That's the beauty of pretty much everything we can perceive being composed of more traits than there are hairs on a typical human head: sooner or later, you'll find a similarity.  It also helps that everything we humans make is inspired on some level by something we've perceived at some point in time.

Also, paradoxically, it's the Dwarves in DF who are blue-skinned, not the Elves.  Anyone who's used Dwarf Companion to set a Dwarf to be butchered and seen their skin laid on the refuse pile can tell you that.

Erm, no.

Humans failed. Therefore, they cannot be Dwarves.

Can't forget that the Na'Vi have /carbon fiber bones/, that in and of it's self seems rather dwarfy to me. Rock hard bones and super strength and able to shoot arrows through just about anything.

Clearly you've never heard the Dwarf Fortress tagline.  Dwarves excel only at failure, and often do so in a highly dramatic and entertaining fashion.

Humans: Migrate to the place, infinite in quantity, die by the fortressload, unlimited firepower.
Navi:  Hippies that abuse overpowered ranged weapons :P

So I would tentatively say yes, depending on their level of magma resistance/flammability and their rope reed cloth production capacity.

Also, that movie was epic but I'm going to be disappointed if the sequel(s) don't end with them as the mascots of Pandoraland themepark.  Seriously learn to technology and get a job.

This.

They also didn't undermine the entire forest, then link all the supports to a lever, and pull the lever to cause 'fun' for the Na'Vi. Drop em 10 z-levels and /carbon fiber bones/ are not much help.
