I never said that they were useful for anything other than repairs, I just said that they'd become gnomish champions with a stat boost.

...yeah.  Gnomes are still pretty dang weak.  They do get some leather armor though (which opens the way for purchasing new, better armor), and they'll start fighting off rats and the like instead of just running away.  They're brave little suckers.

Also, they're loyal.  The gnomish main stat is willpower.  Ironically, this means that they'd be particularly resistant to the lure of elven lounges and gambling halls, which they will never encounter...

Haha ok then. I should still play through the extra campaign-y missions and stuff.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Oh hell yes.  The northern expansion really is quite good, especially as far as expansions go.  I quite like the new buildings as well...  The magic bazaar is a particular favorite, and the mausoleum is just what the doctor ordered for certain maps (like for when that idiot archmage decides to go up against a vampire).

And the new quests are brutal.  Absolutely brutal.  But damn good fun...

Yeah, I haven't played any of the new quests yet, I'm still playing through some of the old ones to get reacquainted with everything.

Two other questions:  What's everyone's favorite temples, and what's wrong with dwarves?

I always went with dwarves, and my favorite temples are Dauros/Agrela because Paladins are badass.  I usually go with Lunord for my secondary choice.

Dwarves are ALWAYS late to the party, but the balista towers can be nice if you need to mount an early defence before all your heros can go and do the dirty work. Only time dwarves come in handy is if you've also got a temple to lunord and you're constantly hasting them, or if you got the temple of Krom (or whatever that bezerker temple was called) and you're spamming the rage spell ever so often.

As for favourite temple, it's pretty impressive what you can pull off with a bunch of bezerkers, which makes temple of Krom a pretty good choice for me. Other then that, Krypta's one of my favourites because those skeletons make awesome frontline guards. I sometimes combine them with the nature temple (damnit lost the name) for extra bodyguards and chaos wariors. Makes from a pretty awesome frontline force, plus you also get acces to reincarnate, heal and if needs be also vines (though they're not so hawt unless you're up against a titan or something, or drowning in gold)

Dwarves are the fastest builders in the game, but due to their painfully slow speed, they generally won't make it to the build site until the peasants who finished it have all gone home.

They also only have decent combat stats (don't get me wrong, they're great in a fight, but it just doesn't balance out their speed), and are dreadfully greedy.  While greed can be fine for encouraging them to smash something for you, it also means that they'll turn on you for a buck.

I've actually seen some dwarves go for something that not even a rogue would touch.

As for favorite temple, well...   Krypta is great fun, and the priestesses can get downright scary at higher levels (shadow beasts and vampires can be charmed, if the map supports them).  They also serve as a nice area defense, since the undead minions will patrol around the outside of the temple whenever the priestesses are resting.

The same goes for Fervus as well, and I've got a little soft spot in my heart for those crazy cultists...  Shiny Bee will always be remembered for his bravery in times of...  Utter safety.

Cultists are also pretty good at negating the irritation factor of sewer grates.  They just charm the giant rats that pop out before they can nibble on anything (if they're close enough).  They also serve the same defensive role as the priestesses by having their wild animal hordes sitting around the temple on off-time, but most of the animals they pick up are...  Well, chaff.  It gets better at a top-tier temple, when the cultists get a steady supply of hellbears for their disposal.

Rust spitters and wendigo, however, can really screw things up for whatever they're smashing.  It's sort of the same deal as with Krypta, but applies to different maps/enemies.

For general use, however, Agrela's healers are absolutely my favorite.  I can't tell you how amazingly useful it is to have these ladies running around and patching people up for you.  They made it possible for a few city guards to fight off a troll while my other heroes were busy wandering around in circles.  Plus, Agrela's healing and resurrection spells cost less than the chaotic versions.

Monks are also kinda cool.  Vigilance is an absolutely awesome spell, and the monks are actually pretty good at beating stuff up.  It's a shame that they can't buy upgrades, but that goes for most of the temple servants.

As for Lunord and Helia, I'd have to stick with Lunord.  Helia's gals are really nice to have in a fight, but they're slow and they tend to be in the wrong place at the wrong time more often than not.  Lunord's adepts, on the other hand, manage to be *everywhere* at the right time.  They're not particularly great fighters, but they're excellent when it comes to those annoying minor enemies that pop up when you're not expecting them.

Krolm is cool, as in really cool...   But I don't really think the barbarians justify missing out on all other temples.  I don't know, I'll have to toy with them a bit more...   They did, after all, get quite a bit more interesting with the expansion.

What is this game you just put on my shopping list about?

Majesty is, in essence, a medieval fantasy RTS.  What sets it apart is the manner in which it accomplishes this.

Instead of building troops and commanding them to do battle with nasty fiends and whatnot, you construct guilds that allow you to hire heroes.  These heroes will rest at their guild, visit inns, purchase new equipment at the marketplace/smithy/bazaar, and go adventuring into the wilderness entirely of their own accord.

You have no direct control over any of the heroes in the game (actually, any of the units in the game, period).  The only way to convince them to do something specific is to place a reward for doing it, such as putting a bounty on a troll that's been bothering you.

The way I like to imagine it is like Baldur's Gate, but you're playing as the city instead of the adventurer.  You provide the heroes with places they can relax, buy new armor, enchant their weapons, research new spells, purchase healing potions, and even poison their weapons.  In return, the heroes spend their hard-stolen money on your goods, and then go out raiding monsters for more.

The game is incredibly fun to play if you like that sort of indirect system (which I do), and there's just something very satisfying watching a bustling city go about its daily life.  There's a demo for it out there somewhere...  And I think they even have a demo for the expansion pack.  I recommend trying them out in order to get a feel for how the game handles, and see if it agrees with you.

EDIT:  Yeah, rock golems actually aren't that bad when you get down to it.  It's just that their insane magic resistance will freak out your usual heavy-hitters, the wizards.  Not to say that they can't lay some serious smackdown on your heroes, but they're not as bad for warriors as, say, an evil oculus.

Oh god, the eyes...   I *hate* those things.

Yeah, oculi are bad news.

It seems like apart from Daemonwoods, Oculi, Rock Golems, and Dragons, most of the monsters aren't really a huge deal for a good hero.  Paladins can take minotaurs at level 1, something I happily exploited by always playing the Champions of Law freeplay start.

Oh, the quest bosses are not included in that list. They're mostly pretty tough.

You haven't seen "a good hero" until you've seen a level 9+ wizard singlehandedly eradicate an entire goblin settlement.  for a few moments there's this massive chaotic storm of magical energy, and then the wizard just starts walking away.

Then the dust settles, and you see all the tombstones and wreckage he left behind.

Good times.

Bah, Majesty 2 just isn't doing it for me compared to the first. *Sigh* If the second game is good I end up buying the first and if the first it better I've already got the second in the mail.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.
