Never noticed before, but abculatter doesn't have Horseback Riding. He can command legions of bloodthirsty elephants but putting a guy on a horse is beyond him, as are the intended firedancers.

I've considered merging Horseback Riding and Animal Taming/Training at that time actually, but I think some players had both already. I think there were other reasons not to do it in that situation, but if I were starting the game again, I would definitely combine the two. Well, there would be more changes to consider(Construction is quite an overloaded technology in comparison to most), but you get the idea.

Not a whole lot, but you'll also have to build stables, so it'll be at least two turns.

I can confirm that it doesn't cost much, being a basic technology. Exact amounts wouldn't be helpful, though.

Weelll, I've been wrestling with Ubuntu for the better part of Saturday in attempts to get Dwarf Fortress running (among other things) now that the new releases won't work on Win2k. So, yeah. But at least it works now.
