I'm interested in as much as you are willing to share.  It sounds pretty awesome to me.

Maybe, to avoid conflicts of interest, you could have two divisions of the arena.  Division One could have "helpers" from participants in Two, and vise versa.  Then everyone can play (Even you could if you passed to reigns to someone else for division Two) without being overly biased.  Maybe occasionally have an exhibitionist match between the two for betting purposes, but no lasting outcomes for the participants.

Well I'll worry about anything like that later when there is a better idea of how all this is working.

As per the book, well it follows several characters including the leaders of both sides of the conflict, several civilians, and a soldier. It basically follows this war which has broken out between a vaguely theocratic aristocracy and their supporters vs the more technologically minded lower class workers. Its somewhat hard to go into too much detail without spoiling things. But those who like sci-fi, fantasy and steam-punk aesthetic should enjoy it.

I will definately be in this. Umi's idea is good.

Also, there should be publicly available modded weapons. I'm forseeing a new subforum possibly arising. We could probably turn it into a community-run game.
Alot of that seems like it would end up as what we call a "clusterfuck"

Over all, I want to keep things simple and accessible in terms of item management and such like that. A complex community of under-the-table alliances and match manipulation is always fun and interesting, but slogging through hundreds of posts about menial tasks would be annoying. Thats not to say that I'm against the idea of player run shops or anything, maybe not official ones but a vibrant black market perhaps. In the end though, its best to get the basics up before I start making promises about anything else. Ideas, however, are always welcome.

One thing that I think should play a role in all this is the "crowd", the hypothetical people cheering from the stands. If, for instance, a fighter wins a match without taking a hit then the crowd should be excited, throw money or items. Perhaps there will even be special prizes given to those who have exceptional fights. We'll see how it all works out.

Just to add my opinion, I would also be pretty much against allowing most modded participation (despite the fact that I would very likely have a Dracon Swordsman entrant if I could).

Sure it would be awesome, but it would probably turn out to be a nightmare for figuring out balance.  Costs would have to be figured out for almost every raw token.  And alot of those tokens like heatdam point or properties of flesh materiel would themselves cost more or less based on values inside the token itself.  It would all really be more trouble than it's worth.

I wouldn't be opposed to cosmetic changes though, stuff like copies of weapons with a custom name and stuff like that I would be fine with. Just as long as the object retained it's original stats..

That would work fine. I have no problems with doing that either. Doing stuff like cloning a sword and calling it a katana is fine and dandy. Things like broadswords and claymores are a little more difficult though since the names imply a more heavy, slow higher damage weapon.

The game already provides longswords, shortswords, daggers, two-handed swords, and scimitars.  How many more do you need to work off of?

Interesting fact:  A dwarf will (generally) not be able to use a two-handed sword.  However, if given a human longsword, they will wield it with both hands.

This is a great idea, and I'd love to get in on it once we've got a fair, working system.  Perhaps multiple leagues and the possibility of team events with multiple players working together against each other and various other forumers betting on the outcome.  Of course, this all depends on an almost obsessive OP who is willing to stage all the fights, re-create every fighter and such flawlessly time and time again, and maintain an orderly OP with everyone's stats, data, deceased status, etc all at once.

Also, uploaded combat logs are a most, and videos of the better fights would be ideal.

At some point we WILL need more than one person or someone who can manage it 24/7

Hm... IRC channel with a bot, anyone?

If you want to use a 2-handed sword, might as well stick to humans. They should be legal as well.

On a different note, would be awesome to play as lizardman or cave swallowman.

a minor request which I doubt will be answered.

Would my slingshots be allowed as available weapons? They are generally weaker than crossbows, but are still very effective.

I usually limit them to being made out of wood, as it is my kobold camp weapon of choice. (The gore damage can be explained as snapping the band at the enemy)

Perhaps, but remember that everything will be changed in the new version so this will need to be recoded. Even then it needs extensive testing before I ok it for general use.

Yeah, more then likely. I just need to get some good dependable people who are willing to abstain from most arena play.

I think it would be best to avoid any modding if at all possible, just so everyone knows exactly what they're up against and what they have available.  Plus we wouldn't have to worry about people constantly arguing that their favorite additions should be included, etc.

The modding that does happen will be very minor, mostly concerned with aesthetics and name changes. There will be no concessions made to single players so if something does get added in then everyone has the ability to use it.

I think i will give a shot runing stripped-down as-simple-as-possible team area:

8 characters, 800 gold/points each (costs from embark screen). Simple team-vs-team fights. No banks/asssinations/special types of rounds/whatever would make it unnecesarily more complicated.

Toady said dwarves can use any weapons on the next release, so I don't see why they woudn't be allowed to use greatswords. Even D&D dwarves can use them.

And I think most modding shound't be allowed, apart from changing a few names to fit the mood and stuff.

Also, will creatures like Iron Men and GCS be allowed? Like adding a value to them and allowing rich enough players to add them into their team?
