Science Olympiad
« on: March 06, 2010, 09:16:23 pm »

I've been hearing about it a lot on these forums as of late, and I just got back from the Eastern Washington competition. We failed pretty hard at most of the build-aheads, but our Egg-o-naut and waterclock were awesome.

I crammed for the past two days for Ornithology, and my team was the only one to answer all the questions. Anyone else have a good time?

What is this scientific event you speak of?

We may not be as brave as Gryffindor, as willing to get our hands dirty as Hufflepuff, or as devious as Slytherin, but there is nothing, nothing more dangerous than a little too much knowledge and a conscience that is open to debate

Ecology, and Disease Detectives.

My partner and I got silver IN BOTH by guessing on over half.

Illinois Olmpiadian here! Got 4th in Trajectory, only losing by two points, because I broke the machine on the way there. It stilled out-fired 20 other schools in the area. Got the gold in Write It Do It because my partner kicked ass at writing.

An organization of scientific folks set up a competition, and ask middle and high school teams to follow their rules to win medals.

The East Washington results aren't up yet, but I'm pretty sure I medaled in Technical Problem Solving and Ornithology.

Here's an interesting anecdote from a teammate - "On our second Egg-o-Naut launch, the parachute failed to deploy, allowing the nosecone of the rocket to plow four inches into the ground at over a hundred miles per hour, lawn-dart style". The egg survived.

Pentathalon was exceptionally fun because we had no friggin idea what we were supposed to know or do.
