Hmm,
We made a legendary Aluminum Shield encircled with Aluminum!
It was the last pieces of metal we had, and I was just about to make cages with it!

It's value is 120000 Dbucks.
Not a typo.

EDIT: And guess who took it?  That would be me!
Stupid humans are as bad as elves, they brought SO MUCH CLOTH. I bought a couple barrels of it, and a couple barrels of leather.

ALL THEY BROUGHT WAS A FEW SEEDS, LEATHER, AND CLOTH.

No it is your duty with an artifact alminium sheild to run into a goblin ambush and kill them all  8)

...While I'm backing you up  :P

Heh, this Autumn we had a goblin ambush, we caught one in a cage, the rest were murdered before they could do anything.

One season to go, and we have a guy who wants bones and shells. Shells. FUUUUU
He is probably gonna die.

In the fortress I'm playing on my own, I had someone demand cloth.  I began walling him in, when traders arrived!  So I bought a bunch of cloth, and he did... nothing.  Apparently he wanted silk.  And I've had three more dwarfs since demand cloth, only to ignore my seven barrels of rope-reed cloth.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

that's the one thing about moods I'd change.  nothing wrong with using a preferred medium if it's there, but if it's not I'd just use something else, wouldn't you?  it's different with the forges, where heat could be an issue, but seriously, if you can't find diamonds, use clear quartz!

Actually, a dwarf will (to my knowledge) use something else if he can't find a diamond.  That's because diamonds, emeralds, opals and rock crystals are all listed under the same object type.  Namely, gems.

However, silk cloth and plant cloth are two separate item types.  So while a dwarf may use giant cave spider silk cloth instead of (smaller) cave spider silk cloth, or may use bat silk cloth instead of cave spider silk cloth, he will never use rope reed cloth if he wants bat silk cloth.  Just as he will never use phantom spider silk cloth if he wants pig tail cloth.

Trust me, it was *much* worse in the old days.  Back then, a dwarf would have very specific desires as to what he wanted to put in his artifact.  If he wanted rubies, by Tekkud, you'd damn well better have some rubies.  And if he wanted marble instead of granite, well, you'd better make sure you had marble.

And if he wanted cave lobster shell instead of turtle shell, it was time to bring out the military.

good to know.  I was just using the diamonds and quarts as an example though.  you seem to get what I'm saying.

Like a waterfall... Is a lavafall in any way beneficial? I'm in the middle of making one just for the heck of it but I just don't know if its going to benefit me whatsoever by making my dwarfs happy or something.

We all die eventually, though more so for dwarfs.

An insane child kills the remaining group of spine injured dwarfs shortly before starving to death himself. Thus ended Weightknives. May the souls of the fallen rest in every level of Armok's 1000 hells.

Nope.  Falling water generates mist, which makes dwarves happy (and slightly damp).  Falling magma does nothing except incinerate stuff it touches.

However, if you cause a cave-in over lava, the impact will generate what is known as "magma mist".  This will not give a happy thought, and will in fact ignite anything it comes into contact with.  Useful for overly-complex trap systems, not so great for the dining room.

Well oops. Too bad I didn't get this before I made a magma fall in my meeting hall. Oh well. So far nothing bad has happened and its mixing with the water under my meeting hall and making a lot of mist.

Mixing magma and water is good :D

Also, I have half a season left, will be done by tonight. I really haven't done anything special, besides making a siege engine building and training room, and a zoo.

Playing now! Sorry my turn took so long...the one thing I dislike about DF is that the lag increases as the game goes on. We have ~65 dwarves now, so no sieges yet.

EDIT: Just noticed on an engraving...our Aluminum Shield artifact's name translates to Siegeshot.
Awesome name.

Here you go.
http://www.mediafire.com/?w3zgtlw2ef2

What I was working on:
In the bedrooms floor, I started smoothing everything. I then engraved the 2 nobles rooms, satisfying QuinnR, but not the mayor. I have to build her a table for a dining room. The room is already being smoothed. Once that room is designated, she just needs 2 chests, and some other stuff.

Also, in the siege engines training (on the same floor), I was building a contraption to allow dwarves to safely walk along the path over the channel, and over to another training area. Once those bridges at the very right of the ballista alley are done, just link them both to the lever. Or cancel the whole thing, I don't care :D
