I would donate a lot more
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:12:06 am »

If DF were updated in any sort of regular fashion. As it is... 2008 was the last release. That was two years ago. I donated $200 two years ago and there still isn't a new release. I love this game but the development is painfully slow. I have money to give, but I can't fund a project that moves like molasses. People who don't even have anything to do with the game release updates more often than the author...

Um...there's a massive update coming soon.  Should be out within a month or two from now and I imagine Toady will see a massive influx of donations, at least he should.

Are you also unaware of what this man is trying to do?  Read the list of changes for the upcoming update and remember that he is a single man.  It's amazing what he's accomplished already.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

I'm aware. I would just like to see a little faster development. After all, I love funding DF. It's sort of a pet project of mine. I just want to see a little progress. Donating $20 now... so Toady can eat tonight. Get yourself a double bacon cheeseburger

He was donating 2 years ago? Might have been a different system. *shrug* I dunno.

This particular stretch was unusually slow for Toady, due to the scale of the update...it's going to be practically a whole new ball game.  Besides, Toady is also known for quality updates. That seems to me to be much more worth supporting, than those indie games which do frequent bug-inducing patches. *coughStarportcough*

There's nothing wrong with donating by release.

I find it completely reasonable to donate by version and in direct proportion to the change importance/size; with no relation whatsoever to the time span. Exactly as you'd pay for a game and then full price again for its sequel.

What I don't understand is the opposite.

The advantage of the donation method is, essentially, that you can get the game as soon as it's released and then donate based on the amount of evolution.

Didn't we already have this thread?  I mean, I remember one with pretty much the exact same OP, even the "last release was two years ago" line, but with a lot more posts.

Anyway, stop bitching, most games never have open alpha testing, and a lot of games which do are more like pre-alpha tech demos or bare-bones "games" with only the basic mechanics, whereas Dwarf Fortress, even while only a quarter complete, is still a mostly-functional game.  Besides, Toady does usually make smaller updates, and you can see on the Dwarf Fortress home page that prior to this span, he released an update weekly. or even sooner for bug fixes.  This one, like the transition to 3D, required a complete rewrite of critical aspects of the game; you can't get something like that done in a week.

I am sad to see that even this community receives it's share of trolls and this number seems to be increasing.

Trollers are so funny. We all love toady.

On a side note. I feel stupid telling my buddy who quit playing that "Man a release is coming next week." Every week. Its fun. I don't mind.

Don't feel bad. Just keep telling him, even after the release. Do it until he cracks.
