Floppy disks=scrolls.
'cept you need a computer to 'execute' (read) them. And they can be used multiple times.

The Optimized/Debugged/Buggy item system is similar to the B/U/C system too:

So far I've noticed:
Buggy enhancement floppy discs plant bugs on the item supposed to be enhanced.
Buggy equipment can't be removed, buggy weapons often misfire.
Buggy ray guns(wands) always fail, and may explode.
Buggy implants malfunction often, and can't be removed.
I can't really tell the difference with buggy canisters(potions).
Optimized floppy discs can choose their targets, i.e. optimized debuggers allow you to choose which item to debug, as opposed to only affecting equipped items, among other things.

Also, playing as a software designer allows you to see any item's bug state automatically.
I'm playing 0.6.2 though, since there is no Windows version of the current game.

Spam has no target. It just gives you a choice if optimized.

For some reason, I can't get the game to work on Vista (I did not select this by choice). I tried XP compatibility mode, but that doesn't work either.

Is it in your Program Files folder, by any chance?
I'm using Vista and it works just fine.

It is on my desktop. Do I have to move it elsewhere?

Is there any good way of finding something's bug status as a space marine?

If you find the bug detector disc, it'll tell you whether you have buggy items... but it won't tell you exactly which ones unless it's optimized. Identify floppies will tell you an item's bug state.

Other than that, equipping/zapping an item will tell you if it's buggy or not. Though that kinda defeats the point.

Optic Blast is a full-of-win Mutation. If you start with it very few things can defeat you for the first several levels.
