At long last! I feared my vesseldwarf would get outside of my sight before reaching the site!

First things first, I have to have them dig their home.

We have to work somewhat quickly, set up workshops and dig, dig, DIG!

I have to be careful and provide for my companions, Armok knows what a dwarf without alcohol might do if they stay that way for long...

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

Hm... it seems that, despite my best efforts, no-one decided to settle here in Speakerrings. It'll be tight, but so far the year has been uneventful; my vision and my crystal reveal that the golems and imps have decided to stay in their lava, which won't remain that way once I finally convince the mountainhome to sent some military dwarves.

In lighter news, we found a block of native aluminium and managed to get three yellow Zircons. The mountain has plenty of magma-safe stone as well seeing as they are sitting on it.

We really need extra hands and beards, we can't possibly meet all this demand with only-

Shoot! The Caravan? Bu-ubu-but we can't possibly...

Alright, I'll see if I can, at the very least, get something form them - like a cat, these vermin won't be left to do as they please.

Shoot, no migrants, overtasked dwarves, a lone crafter that also has to do furniture and the caravan is here. Think I should deconstruct the depot and scam them out of their underwear?

Is that a stone stockpile?
What made you think that it's a good idea to make your dwarves carry around stones for all day? And why not quantum dump them instead?

I am quantum-piling, those are for the mass-orders of furniture and crafts. Plus, some of those are lava-safe and are going into a special stockpile if I ever get them to dig fast enough. I also am trying to set up offices for the Bookkeeper (I think it was Particle or Broccoli) and the manager (myself).

I have some prepared meals to trade (I've got my dwarf with some noble duties like appraisal and other, fortress essentials like cooking and brewing, and architecture). Everyone else is either a mason, a carpenter or the like.

That stone is gonna end up being pretty useful for whoever builds the defensive fortifications, since there isnt much natural stuff to build the defenses out of.

The fortress is at the top of a mountain, you can carve fortifications on the sides and kill'em as they climb.

Unless they come from behind, which is only a level below the entance.

I suggest more hatch covers, but magma safe ones (this is only an attempt to rise the value to get migrants... didn't work). :'(

The basic ones, mining, carpentry, masonry...

Only two dorfs got administrative skills, the rest is going to be trained at site. I managed to get an anvil, but somehow forgot to get a cat, I'll see if I can coax one of of the caravan with the prepared meals I have left.

There's exposed lava further down south, but it's guarded by it's inhabitants, hence my disappointment at not getting cannon fodder migrants this season.

Dig a tunnel to the magma pipe but stop two squares away from the boundary of the pipe. Carve fortifications in the end of the tunnel, then go to the Z-level above and channel the last remaining stone. Stick some floodgates in to control the magma ahead of time and do this well underground so that your guys aren't running around where they can be fireballed.

Genius, now why I forgot about that strategy? I just did that in my Vanilla game for my water supply... I would also construct a wall to double-fortificate, to avoid imps being pushed through.

It is currently Autum, though, and they aren't going to move much... I'll set up some designations, if they dig, good, if not, the next won't have to do anything but wait for completition and build the new wall.

I'll also add regular forges, in case a moody dwarf decides magma just isn't his thing (well, they are called strange moods for a reason).

How come you never see dwarves with a preference for magma listed? Or is it just a given?

It's just the first year, other than the merchants not having cats and me forgetting to forbid the dwarves from cooking the booze, I think the greatest update would be me trying to breach a lava pool without killing everyone and digging through three or four Microcline layers and an Orthoclase layer. I don't even have migrant soapmakers to make fun of!

... I don't have migrants period...

No moods, no nothing! I'm only outfitting the dinning room and building a couple of offices. I've given each dwarf a room 4 tiles long, with a door, coffer, cabinet and bed each. Oh, and smooth them as well.

The "Clownite" is, according to the map, to the right of the magma (probably a 100 or so z-levels below), but I doubt I could please the king this soon.

There is something else, the export agreement!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have some iron ore, it's just a matter of getting the miners a tad more experienced to mine it out!

And this is it... time for player two! Sindain, your run has got to be more exciting than mine... :'(

I've set up a small pile of Alunite for magma-safe mechanisms and floodgates, though it might require additional micro-managing. Also, don't forget to wall off the magma level before digging further down.

Here's the save.
