Journal of Sindain

1st of Granite, 202
It's official, the pressure of being outpost manager has driven our leader insane... Since he has been deemed unfit to lead us, it has been unanimously decided that i will quietly take over his post as outpost manager...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The fortress so far has a decent layout.. but our food stocks are slightly low and my beard curls at the inefficenty of our coal run forges.. finishing the magma forges will be a top priority... the mesa could also use a bit more fortification and we need to secure our outside farms... i also plan on expanding the dining room and living quarters, as well as making a channel to bring water for wells and irrigation to our fortress.

One quick question.. Can orcs break down doors?

Spring continues to roll on uneventfully.. on the 12th of granite the damned elves show up wishing to trade.. since we could use some booze i decide not to slaughter them all.. but while hauling food for trading to the depot on of the elves notice us hauling around wooden barrels he then goes crazy and babbles about us "murdering the trees" then they immdeitly depart.. damned hippies

1st of slate- work on the magma forges continue... we also have a bridge wit a channel so we can seal ourselves up in case of greenskin attacks.

nothing more happens until the 25th of slate, when one of our dwarves notice a small band of more dwarves coming towards our fortress! migrants! Sadly half of them wont even have beds for now..

-1 woodcutter
-2 children
-1 blacksmith
-1 weaponsmith
-2  useless peseants
-1 metalsmith
-1 metalcrafter
-1 cheesemaker
-1 engraver
-1 gem cutter
-1 woodworker
-1 woodcafter
-1 brewer
-1 bowyer
-1 thresher

This brings our population to 26

Think im done with df for the night, ill deal with the fresh meat and probably get through most of summer tomorrow..

Do you think we could get some Visual Fortress screenies of the fort and it's surroundings?

Aw... sorry to see you go Particle, you were the bookkeeper. :(

But why trade food to the elves? We'd need metal barrels, but there are better uses for iron and aluminium.

One last thing everyone, the doors and floor hatches are magma-proof alunite, I managed to replace them in the last moment.

My dwarf has organizer skill (in addition to appraisal), so you can use the manager now to help ease up the micro of 26 dwarves.

I would suggest that you draft the peasants and tell the squads to stand down so that they start sparring, in a little over a season, they'll be well into the elite wrestler status.

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

The... the dump is outside...

You might want to set up a new one inside.

Sindain's journal,

11th of malachite- YES! the orcs have been driven off my the efforts of our military's crossbowdwarves! maybe we can now fill that demand for shells!

16th of malachite- The orcs have come AGAIN! now with 3 squads lead by elite crossbow orcs.. only 5 days after the last siege... no way our crossbowdwarf is gunna take on the elites...

12th of sandstone- our poor woodburner finally went insane and is now running around babbling... oo well he will not be missed

19th of moonstone- the orcs weary from hunger finally withdrew.. maybe this time we can actually get something done...

4th of opal- Our gem cutter begins to act very similar to what the woodburner was... i fear for his sanity..

16th of opal- after 12 days of being held up in his shop our gem cutter comes out with a glorious...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...bucket
Archmage appraises it to be about 72000 dwarfbucks.. and the cutter seems to have learned from this experience.. quite nice..

1st of granite, 203- As one year of my leadership passes, i begin to feel the stress of this position, i plan on retiring for now...

YEAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

-completed magma forges
-completed wells
-expanded living areas
-began on tombs
-we now have a four man military with 3 wrestler champs and one elite wrestler/marksdwarf

I have advice for anyone who gets fey moods during a siege, merely place a custom stockpile for all shells (forbid everything but shells on the custom stockpile menu) inside that stays there all the time so you get the awesomeness without the miasma.
