What's with the Microcline hate?
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:24:35 pm »

I don't see what's so bad about it, it's a nice light blue and it helps liven up the usual dull gray rock that your fortress is carved out of. In fact, I must always carve a room of tribute to Microcline whenever I strike it, that area becomes a history room.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

"Nice light blue?" Most people describe it more as "eye-searingly blue." People dislike it because of its color, which most people find too bright, as well as the fact that when you find it it means that you aren't finding anything more useful, such as ore veins or gems, in the same region block.

Besides that, once you've gotten everything smoothed, those dark-grey stones can actually look quite nice. Many people also like their forts to be uniform for aesthetic reasons, and random blocks of blue in their otherwise-black forts are ugly, particularly if you're using a visualizer.

It can be useful as a decoration.

I think mostly, though, it's a combination of the bright color, altogether too common frequency, and the fact that any time you get a "You have struck microline!" message the first time you strike it on a particular z-level.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

Someone created a modded super-metal in honor of Cacame Awemedinade, the reaction calls for 50 microcline among other things. Turning it very valuable.

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

Miners: "Praise Armok, we've struck something!"
Glassmaker: "Crystal rock?"
Mason: "Obsidian?"
Metalworker: "ADAMANTINE?!"
Miners: "Better! It's Microcline!"

The thing I hate about microline is it's the same color as adamantine. That eye-searing cyan color used to be special. Now it's everywhere. Ugh.

You know, you can change the color of it. It even shows up as it's new color in visual fortress.

Right now, mine has the nice purple of pitchblende. Looks great mixed in with the Obsidian, Gabbro, and Rhyolite in my constructed tower.
