A conversation with my trigonometry teacher...
« on: March 01, 2010, 08:40:16 pm »

So he's into gaming, a lot apparently. When we were talking about various different games, he somehow got into the discussion about Nethack. It struck me; if he likes Nethack, he'd probably like Dwarf Fortress... Unfortunately I didn't have the balls to mention it. You think I should recommend him to it? If he's a Nethack player, one would think he'd love Dwarf Fortress just as much.

Sure. Tell him about it.

Convert him with the awesome mermaid harvesting thread! That should be what everyone reads before they start playing DF.

Yes, tell him to read it. He will have a happy face. The happiest face!

And then he might join the forums.
And then he might see this thread.
And that'd just be awkward.

But go ahead.  You might as well.

I wanna make a T-shirt commemorating that thread. something like those shirts they give out at special events, except it's something like 13th annual mermaid harvest season or something, and there's a picture of a dorf hammering Ariel.

The reason I actually said this was to see what everyone thought. Suggestions on how to go about the whole recruitment thing would be appreciated, I'm not a salesman!

Just do this:
"Hey, since you like NetHack, I think I have a game you might like. It's called Dwarf Fortress" - Don't elaborate, DF doesn't sound as great as it really is. Give him some well-placed DF quotes (from TVTropes or whatnot) and a link to the mermaid thread, perhaps Boatmurdered, May Green's pack, and Tiny Pirate's tutorial.

Then when you finally mention DF to him, you'll learn that not only does he play it, he was one of the people posting in this thread.

@Duelmaster409:  Why would you need balls?
@jaybud4:  Why would it be akward?  It would rock to be able to talk about roguelikes with a math teacher.

Just tell him some of the awesome things that can be done.  Hint about the numerous ways of disaster.  The humor.  The amazing procedural generation of so many things....  Maybe tell him about the fluid simulation system?  magma?
