Fortifications only stop critters from pathing through it.  Flow, (but not pressure pathing) can push critters through fortifications.  [BUILDINGDESTROYER] critters can bust down floodgates and fortifications doors.  An obsidian plug is ideal.

I just keep the tunnels leading to the forges apart from the magma pipe itself, and use a pump combined with a grate to fill them.  There's absolutely no risk of imps that way, and it's easy to drain the tunnels if necessary.

A direct connection to the magma source is slightly easier, but far less convenient in the long run.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

My sollution for imps has always been this (no problems yet):

1) After digging out the room, dig a shrot hallway ending in a stairway down in the direction of the magma vent.

2) dig a tunnel under the room ending at the magma source, and a stairway up  (and tunnel if necessary) to the magma chamber.

3) Put a door on that short hallway.

4) have a dwarf channel the last square at teh magma source, releasing the magma into the tunnel.

5) Lock the door to the short hallway and wall it in... this seals off that hall from everything forever.

6) Now that you have the magma extended safely under the floors of the room, all you need to do to place a magma forge or smelter is to channel a square where you want it placed and then build the building placing one of it's impassible squares (dark green) over the hole in the floor.

When the forge is built the impassible square seals off that square in the process so imps and magma men still have no way of exiting the magma.

SO, here is what it looks like:

Code: [Select]
~~~~~X~~~~~
Where ~ is the tunnel underground and X is the channel in the room inself.
Then you build the building like this....
~~~~O#O~~~~
    OOO
    OOO

Where # is the impassable square.  Or...

     OOO
~~~~~#O#~~~
     OOO
I can't remember what the glass workshop looks like, but the same principle applies.
When done this way you really don't need bauxite to protect your foundry room.... though an extra layer of protection never hurts.
Bucket of water dropped into the intake pipe once its full. Nothing like a nice impenetrable tile of solid rock to stop intruders...
Doesn't magma turn to obsidian when it's cut off from the source?
No. It evaporates like water... Because apparently molten rock does that.
1/7 magma can evaporate regardless if it's cut off or not.  Really annoying when you are trying to fill a large space and it evaporates as fast as it fills.
I think it's supposed to be more 'cooling off' than evaporation, though the illusion'd be helped by obsidian floors where magma cooled. I reiterate; forges over the holes, and a seperate shaft down to the channel point. Simple and effective.
The water actually evaporates before it affects the magma. You need to build up a decent quantity of it and then release that onto the magma.
