Windmill + Imp Repellent
« on: March 01, 2010, 07:01:18 pm »

Mine will turn on... then turn off. Then it doesnt turn back on. Will it not run at all?

Also, an imp climbed through the flooring of my glass furnace and killed my miner. I had fortifications to block these such things. How did it get through and what can I do to stop this from recurring?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Inside? Oh...

EDIT: yep. That did it. The middle tile was marked "inside". My windmill stack experiment failed. Apparently you can't do it.

Gotta have those windmills outside.

One of the best ways to make a windmill farm is to dual purpose your fortress walls. On the top of the walls, along with your battlements and masterwork statues, can be a huge array of windmills linked together.

You can create almost unlimited power from doing this. Just keep making the windmill farm bigger as you need it.

Yep. I have thought about it, but I am working on my town project. (see Designing A Town, Ducimkol "Workwheels" (Formerly "Small Megaproject Help") The windmill was to be a tower with 3 stacked windmills which didnt work out the way I wanted it to...

As for the imps, I'm not sure, but it happened to me too! Not cool. I heard little murmurings that it had to do with some bug regarding magma flow that could push creatures through the fortifications

You gotta use a locked door/floodgate as well. The fortifications stop the large, dangerous building destroyers, the door stops the small fries.

Apply military when possible, dance on remains. :D

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

Or put the blocking tile of the furnace over the channeled hole where the magma comes through. Only one square is needed... :)

For my magma forge, i use a combination of fortifications, and behind the fortifications i have grates, so the evil imps don't kill valuable workers.  But you have to do that BEFORE the magma is flowing...

I simply only have one exposed square of magma, and put the blocked tile of the forge over it.

I simply only have one exposed square of magma, and put the blocked tile of the forge over it.

This is the generally used method for avoiding this problem. All the smelters have the middle square in the top row as a blocking square. Magma forges have the left & right squares of the middle row as blocking squares. If you channel your magma to flow under these squares you won't have to worry about creatures getting loose in your workshops.

Also if you put a wall grate and/or bars behind your fortification it should help create a second barrier for Fire Imps but the same problem with magma pushing applies so it's better to rely on the above solution.

I bursted out laughing so hard at this that my dog woke up, came in the room, and looked at me like I'm an idiot.

Then proceeded to brag about how he has 27 kills on his kill list and is super-doggenly tough.

I use a single iron pump to get the magma from the magma pipe to the furnaces and smelters.

I put down a few cage traps on the only way to the pump so that the pump dwarf is used as bait, and any imps that come out of the magma to attack will then instantly be captured by the cage traps. It works very well to keep my valuable dwarves secure while also letting me trap the fire imps before their population gets out of hand.

Imps can't reproduce.

But I did use method said above. The furnace blocks the open hole.
