How did a fish get there?
« on: February 28, 2010, 04:37:42 pm »

I just designated a pond area and filled it with water inside my fort. I now have a steelhead trout in it. How did it get there?
Does this mean I could make an artificial lake where it is safe to fish?

The trout (like most fish) is a vermin, and as most of the community knows, Vermin do not obey the laws of time and space and often teleport around.

You can make a safe fishing lake like this, even underground.

And here I thought this would be a topic about a noble getting their room mysteriously locked, filled to 3/7 water... and then carp'd.

Vermin do obey the laws of space and time. It's just that they're so small ([SIZE:1]) that they only manifest on a quantum level. This allows them to quantum tunnel all over the place.

Agreed. I actually got a fishing area to appear over a magma pipe once while I was capping it, with turtles crawling around and probably a fish or two. I actually got the message that there was no fish in the magma pipe.

No, there are two types of fish in the game, large creature fish which are sharks, carp, and various big river fish, and theres the vermin fish.

A mystery, but true.

I embarked on a glacier once. Tunneled in, found an aquifier (how does that work anyway?) and out of it I got fish and fresh water. The dwarfimoes settled in and lived well.

then I got bored and left them to their fate

An aquifer is a layer of water-soaked rock or soil. In DF, it will generate water up to its won level. In RL, it's both better and worse; you *can* drain one, but if the pressure is high enough you'll get an artesian fountain rather than an artesian well.
