So I am wondering when milking cows is going to be implemented. Though amusing, I believe that the milkers don't like being turned into the Expeditionary Meat Shield Squad seeking out ambushers with such regularity.

It just seemed like something that would be relatively easy to make happen.

"Milker" is is the dwarven equivalent of "Red Shirt"

Dwarves can milk a certain creature, I think.   It's just not a cow.

And yeah, I knew about the purring maggot but I felt that they were too rare to pull milkers off pincushion duty.

Is there a way we can make other creatures milkable? Why don't cows work? It seems as if it would just be a RAW tag (I have no idea if it is or not, but it would match toady's MO from what I've read thus far)

The current problem is that a Dwarf needs to pick up the creature they're milking (or hold it, I forget precisely which). Currently the only milkable creature small enough for a Dwarf to hold is a Purring Maggot, hence they're the only ones that get milked.

So, looks like you can make milking vermin and they'll work just fine. Anything larger is a no-no.

Add the milkable tag to dwarves. Males could produce delicious +salty dwarf milk+!
