Let's Play X-COM: Terror from the deep
« on: February 27, 2010, 10:10:37 pm »

It has been nearly 40 years since the end of the First Alien War. The destruction of the Alien base on Mars was supposed to bring about a new age for humanity.

It didn't.

Much of the technology pioneered by X-Com requires elerium-115 to function. The council of funding nations attempted to funnel what few stocks were left after the war into interstellar travel. X-Com established under water bases to expediate the salvage of UFO wrecks on the ocean floor. None contained any usable elerium.

As the years went by there was less and less elerium to power the technologies discovered during the war. elerium bacame restricted for military use only, and governments begin buying elerium from the black market. the last supplies of elerium are depleted in the year 2010.

That was 30 years ago.

Now, X-Com has been reactivated following the destruction of the Hyperion, a luxury cruise liner. Every day, the number of USO  sightings increases. The Council of Funding Nations has been re-instated, and X-Com reactivated for the Second Alien War.

That's Right, it's

MobyGames! What a classic. But seriously, I think they frown upon hotlinking.

NAME: Jim "Bubbles" Eyre
PREFERRED LOADOUT: Rifles and Nades
BIO: Jim earned the title "Bubbles" while working as a U.S. Navy Seal. Notorious for an incident involving indigestion and a stealth-sensitive mission; he almost accidentally set off trip alarms while passing a waypoint before his team reached their rendezvous point to begin their mission. Because of the accidental discovery of lacking security from a faulty trip alarm, the mission-critical target's security didn't see the attack from the inside coming. Infiltration was a bit easier due to bypassing heavier resistance. Thanks to having gas at the wrong moment, he became a hero. However, his nickname may state otherwise.

Name:  Steve
Preferred Loadout: most high-tech Pistol and grenades available, plus stun prod and medkit.  Later on, rely only on melee weapons.
Bio:  He used to be a student of the arts . . . of WAR!  Which is to say, taking artistic photos of particularly pretty explosions.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Name: Jax

Prefered Loadout: Guass Rifle (Any rifle will do, just a prefernce) and Particle Disturbance Sensor with some explosives added for some extra fun

Bio: Cookie Cutter special forces soldier, Jax decided that shooting at the Alien Menace would be more much interesting than his regular work. A good shot and relativly stable mentally. Fond of explosions, Jax is hardly ever around without an audible "Boom" nearby. Doesn't handle confined spaces well.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Place it between America and Europe and name it Atlantis.

Name: Tasjack
Weapons: Any sonic weapon, any will do, but at the start use the harpoon pistol. Also likes to carry a melee weapon as well in case of lobster man.
BIO: One of the first experiments done by the aliens, a mix between a human and a Tasoth, still able to retain his humanity. This experiments were to be used as sleeper agents and assassins due to them looking like humans but increased strength. Escaped and decided to go help X-COM fight the alien menace. Tries to keep his identity secret. His name before the experiments was Jack.
Preferred stats: High health, high bravery and good aim with a gun.

Also I would like it if Tasjack was in the first batch of incoming soldiers, not in the starting 8.

Name: Myroc
Role: Submersible Weapons System pilot.
Background: Has a military history dating back to the first alien war, but has unfortunately become too old to follow X-Com personnel into physical combat. To still be able to provide support to X-Com troops, he has been assigned an SWS to pilot.

(Weird shit is going to happen if I die in the other LP.)

Name: Robert "Whale" Small
Preferred weapon: Torpedo launcher, with the best available sidearm as a backup. When possible, I'd like for him to upgrade to the alien ultimate explosive weapon who's name I cannot remember.
Bio: Robert was always three sizes too large, and all the exercise and dieting he could manage didn't help. He is a highly religious man, and considers his weight to be some sort of divine joke, often laughing along with those who joke about his weight. He is a heavy weapon's specialist sent from the USA to help in the war effort.

Preferred base site: Between Japan and China.

so we currently have one vote for the Atlantic, and one for the Sea of Japan.

also, what should we research first? Medkits, Gauss technology, or Particle Disturbence Sensors (motion trackers)?

Gauss technology.

Also, I vote for the base to be placed in the gibraltar straight. (The small area of sea between Spain and Northern Africa.)

So, 30 years ago the war ended, and elurium imports ended. then 30 years ago the supplies were finally exhausted...

Name: Anya Snow
Favorite equipment: Command Center, or rifle + other equipment, or (if i last that long) pistol with psi amp equivalent

The original base commander of X-Com's successful ground forces in the first alien war. this aging commanding officer is a wealth of good advice and inspiration. She struggles with withdrawal from the psi amp due to her access to one being cut off by the lack of elurium 115.

(I hope you don't mind if i ever manage to finish x-com ufo, i move onto TFTD myself. i look forward to seeing your work.)

I vote for pacific ocean, closer to USA and medkits. they save lives, higher fire power can wait.

good luck commander *salutes*
