So yeah... Alice in Wonderland...
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:15:55 pm »

I'm sure everyone has seen the adverts for this thing. I can understand people "trying" to take my childhood and make it more awesome (Speed Racer), but now they're taking something from my childhood and making it nightmarish.

I just don't know what to say.

You mean, the original wasn't nightmarish to you?

I always thought of it as charming and whimsical. Although the part with the Walrus and Clams makes me cringe a little bit now that I look back at it.

I hate Tim Burton.  I hate him so much.

Every hot topic kid with their Slipknot and their purple stockings will be talking about Alice in Wonderland and dressing up like her (even the guys) and being completely obnoxious.

I know, my sister is a hot topic kid.

The original was about the boundaries between the childhood world and the adult world.  Or at least that was my understanding.

You can always watch Sci-Fi's "Alice" mini-series. But it's not as nightmarish.

But if you are into nightmare fuel; you can always play American McGee's Alice. I have yet to play it, but it did pique my interest.

Hot... topic... kid?  I am deeply confused.  Are people not wearing clothing assembled from a variety of locales nowadays?

Also, what's wrong with purple stockings?  I wear purple knee socks with plaid skirts, striped shirts, and the occasional brightly flowered corduroy jacket.  I do not think I could be called a "hot topic kid" by any stretch of the phrase.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is what I'm talking about.  The girls, or at all the ones my sister hangs out with, also like to wear very high purple and black striped socks with their skull purses and Invader Zim hoodies.

Huh.  That is vaguely disgusting.

It's terrible.  If those kids find out Hot Topic is owned by the same company that owns Abercrombie and Fitch they'd all have aneurysms.

We must make it universal knowledge.

Penny Arcade did that strip on Dante's Inferno and Moby Dick. Everything will receive a gritty reboot. Even Charlie Brown. Lucy will hold a grenade so Charlie can kick it at the enemy, but will pull it up and it will detonate in their faces. Lyonel will play his piano at the funeral.

For me, everything except that part (and some of the poems? Jabberwocky was pretty good) I hated with a passion. There's just something so disturbing to me to see a world that shouldn't work because there's really no way for it to work. Possibly why I hate impressionist art? Maybe.

Hey, hot topic kids still wear Jack Skellington patches. It doesn't make me hate Tim Burton, it just makes me hate the hot topic kids more, for defiling something I love.

I've reserved judgment on Alice in Wonderland until I see it. Could be awesome, could be horrible, you just can never tell with Tim Burton.
