It does depend on which elf you're talking about. most are portrayed as little trickster thingies that lived in trees, and dwarves (at least in Norse Mythology) lived UNDERGROUND and made stuff for the gods and heroes. They didn't live in trees or act like stupid tricksters or anything.

Dwarves also shared characteristics with also creatures such as Trolls (though they were large in stature), and the Tomte.
