What scares you
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:23:55 pm »

For me it's roaches, they're the only insect that always scares the crap out of me, I used to live in a house infested with the little turds and was always careful to sleep on my side with an arm over my ear because for some reason my mother decided to tell me if one crawls in your ear they'll go into brain and drive you insane (WTF?? Why tell me that?).

Huh? Roaches are cute, not scary!

Anywasy, what scares me is humanity. You couldn't make something more insane if you tried to. Sometimes I could almost swear some have antioccamian priors...

An infinity of nothing after death. Seriously, every time I start to think about it my mind blanches.

Oh, and roaches.

Knives that other people are holding and putting my hands in glass cups.

Both very reasonable, the first goes away as soon as I get the knife, and the later is because I lost a pinky to one of those evil things...

(The early is because my twin cut her thumb, for the most part, off when she was five. (they sewed it back on)

inb4 someone says "Janet"

I fear that I will one day lose my memories, to forget what I once was is more horrifying than any death.

And heights. I freak out anytime I'm more than 10 feat above the ground without something to hold on to.

to forget what I once was is more horrifying than any death.

I disagree. You are capable of recovering from memory loss under desirable circumstances. You are not capable of recoving from even a mild case of death.

Besides, ignorance is bliss. If you have no understanding of what you once were, you have no understanding of what you might have been. Lying on your deathbed with crystal-clear memories of all your failings doesn't sound nice.

I have no serious fears; but I do have a great dislike for large spiders.

I can tell you, from personal experience, that that fear is justified. There is really nothing more awful than that a human brain is capable of experiencing.
I get that, gradually, every day... It really can't be described, it's even worse than what I suspect you fear it is.

Wich reminds me of another fear: sleep. Basically, you die, are at the mercy or anything, is put through a lotus eater machine and have your mind warped again, and then you're resurrected. You spend half your time in this state... and that's only the beginning, easily-put-into-words top of the iceberg...

My fears involve the general harm of people around me. Sure there are the usual physical fears like heights, but they pale in comparison to the fear of people. Specifically, what could happen to people. Will my father just stop handling the stress and snap? Will my mother do the same? Will my brother start doing risky things again, now that he lives in Switzerland? Will my older sister be harmed during those late nights at college? Will my little sister crumble beneath the expectations of her education? Will specific friends not get that job that is needed to keep them afloat? Will other friends just stop caring alltogether?
Hell, there is even starting to be some divisions in this community that I fear will drive us all apart in three years or so. And I am powerless to stop the pains caused to the community if it happens.

Physical fears I can overcome. These... I don't think I can be brave for these. Pride and honor will hold no grounds on this.

Theoretical insanity? Loosing myself? Never awakening from sleep? A state of being half-dead? Fuck it. I'll take it if it means another person can be freed from that fate.

 I fear for people.

Sleep is not an undesirable process. It's necessary. Feeling afraid of it by overthinking the process is understandable, but pointless. Being consistently afraid of it is mental illness. All of the risks of sleeping are, as I said, part of the necessary process, and anyone blessed with a shred of common sense or even human instinct will do his or her best to minimise those risks.

Besides, your brain is hardly "put through a lotus eater machine and(...) warped". You temporarily imagine that you receive sensory input, some of which you may or may not remember.

Mortality as a concept, that which I likely may at some point not exist, scares me. Means or process of death do not.

Oh god this! Amnesia and non-existence, I have sat and thought hard about those two. When I did, my heart raced and I broke out in a cold sweat. And heights, I always hate being high up. Such a long way down.... What if I fell?

I'm afraid of pain, others holding knives, being outside at night, and cars.
I've never actually had anything happen to me relating to these(well, except pain, of course), but I'm just really suspicious and I get really nervous when walking across streets. :(

EDIT: Oh, also large stray dogs.

If you lost your memory, you wouldn't miss them, and if you die you wont exist enough to miss life.
