Let's see... I have an atheist friend (sort of), an agnostic friend, and a Christian one. I really don't care what your religion is as long as you are not an ass about it.

I myself follow a hermetic philosophy, but would say I'm agnostic. I have no idea if there is any greater power, but the existence of one seems to be irrelevant to my life.

After enough online religion related arguments I've come to a conclusion. Everyone should keep to themselves and then it isn't an issue. On the internet in particular I find atheists are the worst offenders, agnostics are generally smarter about it, and by-the-book religious people are 99% of the time on the defensive.

They're on the defensive, because there so far isnt a logically sound platform for an augment on god(s). They also tend to be on the affirmative, and have the burden of proof.

Beside, that, I find the stance of letting everyone believe what they want to believe without examination is dangerous.

Contesting belief is vital to weed out dangerous ones and erroneous ones is a good thing.

This topic started being bad when people came into it to say how bad it was. The act of saying the discussion should not be had lowers the quality of the discussion.

Most atheists I've come across also with the burden of proof because they are so aggressively affirmative when there so far isn't a logically sound platform for an argument on gods. By-the-book theists tend to be on the defensive because they try to defend, as was first discussed in this thread, a several thousand year old hash of translations and edits and numerous things you can't take literally.

Granted I agree there are lines to cross where a person's beliefs should be questioned, generally the insane asylums and prisons hold those individuals from society. What justifies that as your personal duty? How many "dangerous" theists have aggressive atheists saved the world from by converting? Generally I find when under pressure from atheists, many theists snap to extremes, either comically hostile atheist convert or now dangerously irrational theist. You're going to make people more sane by undermining their faiths and challenging them? How does that even sound like a good idea in the first place? I'd like to see you try to walk up to an irrational theist, say, a suicide bomber, and make him come to your realizations that everything he knows is wrong without him blowing everything to fuck up in response.

I have never in my life seen an atheist trying to convert someone do any good. Ever. In fact, I've only seen bad things come of it.

Atheists who try to convert people are assholes, especially if what they believe is true. This is hard to explain, but let me try. It's morally fucked up. I know this has been said around here at least once before. Now imagine we are indeed only dust in the wind. What is accomplished by forcing this on people? There's nothing they can do about it. They were happily asleep until you went about and woke them up. You ever wonder why some people gravitate towards religion and spirituality? It's because it's for them. It suits them. Some people prefer to function under what they find to be complete awareness about life. It suits them as it suits you. They also have a tendency to gravitate towards atheism completely on their own. There's no need to go about and force these things on people.

So why? Why do you find it a life mission to undermine people? You sure as hell aren't making the world safer from "irrational" theists by undermining their faith and beliefs and you sure as hell aren't doing those you "enlighten" any favors.

Atheists need to keep to themselves, never mind the fact their conclusions are as unfounded as the people's they attack. Theists need to keep to themselves, never mind their conclusions being unfounded. They don't mix well. Ever. Nothing good will ever come of them trying to force anything on the other.

Hey everybody: Stay away from people different from you, and whatever you do don't talk to them.

Also: Everybody is wrong.

Ahh, Euld. you are the best example of a good Christian there is :D
You're just.....nice , unlike many others. And you're not exactly pushing your faith on us.
While I'm not particularly fond of Christianity, I find the people that act like GOOD Christians more tolerable than the atheists that go" You're an ignorant fool and I will see to it that you are enlightened!"
But ok, I'm getting carried away by love : 3
Why, thank you  ;D

Theists need to keep to themselves, never mind their conclusions being unfounded. They don't mix well. Ever. Nothing good will ever come of them trying to force anything on the other.
Part of my beliefs though is spreading my belief around.  If I'm going to believe that non-Christians go to hell, then I should really warn people about it.  I agree that forcing definently doesn't work, it either makes more hypocrites or makes more athiests.

That's sort of a problem, though. People often take offense at being told they're going to hell. I know I do. It's essentially saying, "Ha, I'm superior because all you heathens will BURN FOR-EVAR. Be more like me or else you'll be tortured for eternity!" Sure, that's not precisely what you say, but it's what you imply when you state that you believe non-Christians go to hell. Perhaps you can see how that is offensive and rude?

But at least they have respectable motivation to warn people that they're going to hell. The only reasoning atheists have of spreading atheism is... well... ? Because they know they're right and everyone else is "dangerous and erroneous"?

Maybe to warn people that they're wasting a large portion of their life.

If you thought that someone was about to drink poison, would you try to stop him?

It's reasonable to stop somebody from drinking what appears to be poisonous, but it's also reasonable to be kind of pissed off at having your soft drink slapped out of your hand.

But that's just it, only the atheist thinks the theist is wasting a large portion of their life. The theist would tell the atheist he is wasting his life as an atheist.

Yes, but only the theist believes the atheist is going to burn in hell.
