Average FPS?
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:33:18 pm »

What's your average FPS in a fort?
Mine tend to be around 30 in a mid-sized fort. However, my Dig Deeper fort is around 12. Must be all the ants and snakenen.

On my decent setup I get 100FPS on a 5x5 with 80 dwarfs and 50 animals. Weather turned off. On my crappy box I get 65 FPS with 50 dwarfs and 25 animals, weather turned off 3x3 site.

I get ~100fps on a 6x6 with <100 dwarves. About 80fps on an 8x8 with the same. On the 6x6 with 150 dwarves I average between 50 and 70 fps depending on moving water/magma, number of creatures, amount of rocks, etc.

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

A consistent 12-15fps on a 16*16 embark tile with 280 dwarves (and 329 animals, but they're almost all caged so they don't really count).

My machine is, apparently, a beast.

Evidently, Dorf Philosopher Uristmedes only figured out the Uristmedes screw. And he ran around naked and covered in water, blood, and vomit all the time, so any discoveries made in his 4/7 bathtub went unnoticed by dorf science.

I've NEVER seen 100fps outside of menus. That's 2004-quality technology for you.

25-35 on a regular embark with 200 dwarves and a lot of animals. Seems to be slightly less than the average. Oh well, not complaining, someone I know gets like 2 FPS with 7 dwarves on a regular map.

I don't think your freind will be encouraged by toady saying this will be a slow update... Though I think that was because he was going to work on it soon, but whatever.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

50-60 with 80 dwarves-ish and a brook, underground river, magma pipe, and 45 z-levels. It's nice. Drops bad when I get ambushes or activate the water based defenses. Fluid dynamics are hard on the processor, you know.

I was doing 60-70 before I started messing with magma and really playing with making a large resevoir fed with multiple murky pools.  Then it dropped to 50, then 35 or so when my dwarves hit pop 110+ with 200 animals.

Then I tried to play around with crazy and ill-advised [trade_capacity] experiments, and wound up with an FPS of 12.

Yeah, my laptop's from 2004 too. On embark (I only do 6x6s) I tend to get 80s, but my current fort runs 20 if all 100 dwarves are idling and 0~3 when they're busy. Then again, I deliberately do away with efficiency over architectural style.

I butcher my animals wholesale when my fps drops lower than 70. Usually by that time there's about 5-6 pages of them, I cull them back to 2-3, mostly pets. Provides a lot of food, and maybe 10-20 FPS back over the long run.\

Ahh, the joys of owning a new laptop. Nothing like a dual core 2.2ghz processor to make those dwarves move fast (and yes, I know DF is single threaded, but dual core means DF gets a whole core to itself and windows moves everythign else to the other one).

I have an AMD Phenom II X4.

Quad core 3.01 GHz. That runs fairly nicely even with water and animals. I love my dad :)
