After all is said and done, a pdf of all the story posts could be compiled, and that'd make a pretty sweet book to read.

Hmmm... I'm not familiar with X-Com's tech tree, so why don't we go with whatever keeps our men alive?

I also say personal armor. Reduces the chances of dying horribly.

You are pretty squishy regardless, the best way to avoid horrible death is to just not get shot at.
To that end I would suggest blaster bombs, stun bombs, and most of all, hovertanks. Nothing quite like setting up surveillance satellites and launching cruise missiles for keeping the troops safe...

There's also that "look at my shiny golden men in armor, crushing your puny resistance, aliens! MUHAHAHAHA!" feeling.  I do love an evil laugh, every once in a while.

I suggest continuing up the laser tech tree, then going for both power armor (a byproduct of our investigation) and the hovertanks.  We are absolutely terrified by the hoverdisks, and want our own.

Pew Pew Laser cannons as the next research would be nice.  But agent survivability is probably better.  I vote Heavier laser weapons.  With a side order of hovertank.
