I sat up in my bed and rubbed my eyes. I felt mentally exhausted but only a little stiff. I looked around quietly, had I dreamed that entire long day? I heard soft snoring and turned quickly to see what it was. Auraluna was sleeping at my desk with her chair turned towards me.

"Aura? What are you awake?" I asked quietly

"Wha? Ah! I feel asleep, what time is it?" She snapped up in her chair and looked around.

I groggily looked to my alarm clock. "Mmm... It's 4am. What are you doing in my room anyways?"

Auraluna sat and stared at me for a second. "Commander, you passed out at your console. I thought I told you to take better care of yourself!" She glared at me.

I felt like a child who'd been caught by their mother, blushing with red paint on their hands. "I had to stay and make sure the mission went smoothly." I responded quietly.

"You can't keep doing this Anya. You're hurting yourself, even boot camp soldiers get some sleep. I've been looking through some of your command manuals and they keep referring to your second in command. Specifically how they are required to relieve you of duty if you put yourself in harm's way. Why haven't you selected a second in command? She grilled me softly. She was right, a commander required a second in command to help take on the work load and to be available when I couldn't be.

"I had a second in command once... We had a falling out and I decided I could handle command on my own." I replied grimly.

"What happened? Er... If it's ok to ask commander." Auraluna inquired.

"One of my earlier assignments that had me in the position of commander. We were in South Africa doing mostly peace work with the odd secret mission to snuff out aggressive militants in the area. We received notice that some small villages were becoming overrun by a contagious and deadly illness, the dead were piling up and it was spreading. I decided to call in medical experts to combat the illness and find a cure but my second in command had little faith in their ability to get the job done quickly. He convinced my men that the illness needed to be stopped as quickly as possible. When I told him to respect my authority he took control of the situation and ordered the group to purge the villages that were afflicted." I stopped and shook my head. "So many dead people, I never forgot what it smelled like."

Auraluna watched and listened with a look of horror. "What happened after that?" She inquired, wanting to know how such a dark tale could end.

"I called in my superior and they took him away. He was never dismissed but he has never been reassigned to the field. He is either behind a desk somewhere or off on some undercover or black op. The thing that continues to bug me is that I'm not sure if he was wrong. He had a different way of thinking than I did, but not a wrong way of thinking. Other than that incident, he had been an excellent second in command who's cunning and strategic thinking rivaled my own. I could not have another person as my second, I only trust his judgment. I responded with a sigh.

"You cannot keep doing this on your own though Anya. You'll burn out. She stated firmly.

"You are right Aura, as much as I hate to admit, I'm not a divine entity that has limitless endurance. Let me get some rest and I will make some phone calls when I wake up." I replied, deep in thought.

As Auraluna left my room, I wondered about my old second in command, did he hold resentment for my actions? Did he still think he was right? Was I the one who was wrong, for holding onto hope in the face of tragedy? Who knew, but there was only one person worthy of competing with me and it was him.

I slept fitfully, the conversation with Auraluna filled my dreams with the suffering of innocents, The turmoil of having their protectors turn on them in the night.

In the morning I checked my messages. The psionics laboratory was complete and would be ready for it's first batch of soldiers by the end of the month.

I picked up the phone and sighed. I dialed a number and waited for a response. "This is commander Anya Snow. Get me Jack Bladestar.

I tried to limit myself and get as much rest as possible fir the rest of the day but I received a summons from the PA system. I was needed in the command center again. Upon Arriving I was greeted by the radar technician's assistant as always. "A very small UFO was detected over Europe traveling west at 600kt/h." She reported professionally.

I received some concerned looks as I entered the room and sat in my chair. I dismissed them and opened up my console to see exactly where my new target was.

I ordered for Mac to scramble his jet and pursue the alien craft. A couple hours pass as Mac makes his way across the Atlantic ocean. As he nears the United Kingdom the alien touches down near London.

Mac quickly approached the area. "Commander, that UFO was only large enough to carry one creature. Permission to land and show it who's boss on this planet?" He requested with a snarky attitude.

"Granted, only because I like the way you put it and I need to watch my sleep schedule, give it hell Mac." I replied, I got a couple snickers around the room which were quickly quieted.

Mac found a clear spot in the area the UFO had landed. It was a small farm in the countryside near London. He managed to fit his interceptor into a very small opening. Outside the lights of his aircraft illuminated a small patch of ground amidst a sea of black.

Mac adjusts his equipment, he did not realize how heavy it was after the long flight. He drops his spare high explosive clip and readies a flare. Once down the ramp he takes a quick look around and tosses the flare into a nearby plot of land.

"Woah! where did that house come from?" He commented in amazement. The moon was new and without it's light he was nearly blind on his own.

"Mac, aliens seem to favor small houses like these to setup ambush points. I would suggest clearing it first. I suggested.

"Rodger commander." He replied as he moved towards the house. As he nears the corner of the fence however he hears a plasma weapon's discharge. He ducks and turns around but can see nothing.

He pulls out another flare and tosses it into the nearby orchard and hears an alien shriek.

Mac dashes for the door of the house and takes cover inside.

"I didn't see anything but I think I blinded it." Mac reported once he had a chance to catch his breath.

"It won't be blinded for long, try and get some high ground and see if you can catch it by surprise." I commanded.

"I agree commander." Mac replied. "It's so much different being on the ground than in the air. I feel so much more exposed."

Mac made his way across the room to the staircase. As he ascended it another plasma discharge could be heard. A section of wall to the south that once held a window blows inwards and covers the floor in splinters.

"Crap, it spotted me." He reported.

"Advance carefully Mac, use the cover to your advantage. Remember that these things don't seem to think tactically. I instructed as I tapped into the Interceptor's cameras, finding no useful angles.

Mac follows my instructions and advances to the edge of the hole in the wall.

He peers out the hole and spots the alien near the orchard.

"Of course, orchards, the other favorite hiding spot." Mac said quietly through the radio. He took aim and fired on the alien, scoring a Direct hit but failing to take down the floating freak.

The alien recoils from the explosion but manages to return fire! It's shots miss their mark and pummel the wall next to Mac.

Mac attempts to fire off another quick shot but it travels too far.

He ducks behind cover again to collect his strength and nerves. When he slips out of cover again he spots the alien. It had moved much closer to the house and appeared to be charging the front door despite it's ability to fly. Perhaps it's flotation device had been damaged?

Mac cared little though as he lined up a quick easy shot. He fired and sent the alien back to it's makers.

"Good shot Mac! now just clear the area and call in the clean up crew" I cheered and smiled, everyone in the command room joined me in celebration. It took Mac an hour to carefully scout the area but he found no additional hostiles. The clean up crew quickly arrived from London and took over. Mac entered his Interceptor and took to the sky to return home. I took this opportunity to call it a night and get some rest.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
---------------------
Stat Changes:

Mac:
Rank UP! - Squaddie
Kills + 1
TU's + 3
Stamina + 5
Health + 3
Throwing Accuracy + 1
Strength + 3

Mr. Apple:
Rank UP! - Sergeant
---------------------
Accolades:

Positive:
Army of One - Mac - Solo'd a mission, all by himself

Negative:
Eyes larger than arms - Mac - Brought too much stuff to a mission and had to drop some of it to reduce encumbrance
---------------------

Just a little quickly post. Hope you all enjoyed it ^.^ Sadly we cannot begin training our soldiers in psionics until the end of the month (blargh) however that does give us a bit more time to work on the personal armor project. This mission almost failed entirely so I think I will be doubling up Interceptor pilots with an escort soldier to help out on the ground.

-edit- upon re-reading this post, I come to a question. should i break up conversations with a space between speakers? it looks too bunched up together the way I do it.

Yea Mac!  Given 'em hell in the air and on the ground.  I'm very glad he got some more strength, though; dude was pretty darn weak.  I just hope he has great Psi strength to compensate for his lack of TU's, Reactions, Firing accuracy, and muscle.

I see no reason why the interceptor can't have tandem seats. :) Love the idea of sticking a soldier or two in there as pilots and using them on small missions. Risky, but still, adds a nice bit of fun. Might try it in one of my games sometime. I do think that an auto cannon might be somewhat... overkill for a pilot's weapons... but hey, if Mac wants to lug that thing around, who am I to argue? :P

I went with Mac's personality, he's into automatic cannons. I think I will send one or two people with him on these missions in the future.

also in response to frelock: I try to add on an action to a line of spoken word to identify who is speaking rather than leave it up to guessing. Your right though, I should have used some other action.

Also, I will be formatting conversations a little bit differently after this, the big conversation I made in the last post was really bunched together, so I'm going on the advice of my wife and going to insert spaces between speakers. I'm going to edit the post to reflect this change.

Yeah, I think a backup soldier sounds good. Preferably someone with weapons that compliment the autocannon he has. Laser rifle would probably be best.

If not a laser rifle, then a pistol. A one-handed weapon would allow flares and grenades to be thrown easily.

I'll be Mac's backup man.

Name: Lucsly
Kit: Laser Rifle, Medkit, and whatever else generic stuff he needs.

Backstory: Despite being the best damn pilot this side of the Rio Grande, he flunked out of the USAF pilot academy when it was discovered that he was making unauthorized modifications to the aircraft. Upgrades, really. Or so they thought, until one of the "upgraded" birds burst into flames at 10,000 feet... (It was an accident. Really.) Leaving the Airmen's Corps, and joining the paratroopers, Lucsly became a half-decent shot with a conventional rifle. The opportunity to join X-com arose when he saw the battle for LA while visiting family. Thankfully, they all escaped unharmed, but the opportunity to strike back at the... whatever the hell they were... was too great to pass up.

sounds good. he may get his chance to be a pilot again as we still need pilots for the other two aircraft. for now though i'll put him in queue for the next batch of soldiers

OK. I'd rather have him be Mac's copilot/combat buddy, but if you'd rather have more pilots, He'd be more than happy. Just don't let him tinker with anything...

don't worry, he'll be a ground troop for now. gonna wait till we need to hire a few more soldiers (its easier to hire in batches). That being said, if anyone knows anyone who wants a pilot, speak up ^.^

A couple days go by, relatively uneventfully. I received a report that Archangel had assaulted his doctor and fled the hospital. He arrived later on base intoxicated but alive. He proceeded to to have an "explosives" party in the firing range where he invited some of the ground team, scientists and engineers to partake in "blowing stuff up". I later had Archangel come to my office where I gave him a stern warning never to do this again and that he would be confined to the base until the base medics had reported his full recovery. I decided that no formal punishment was needed; The civilian's car was returned safely, the doctor at the hospital was not harmed and would not follow the issue further. The explosives party would come out of Archangel's paycheck but it did wonders for the moral of those who attended.

On the 15th I received word from Urist McGyver that the latest batch of "wussy med-kits" was finished.

I forwarded the message to Auraluna and had her sell the excess while I replied to my head engineer. "When we develop something that is worth more than it's weight in gold, I'll have you build lots of that. For now, please suck it up so I can afford this base some nice things in the next month." I thought for a moment then added "Tanks sadly, do not grow on trees and are quite expensive, I'm hoping to have more than one at a time in the future."

Almost like clockwork, Auraluna replied with an estimate. It made me smile, the estimate was nice too.

I gave her the ok to go on the estimate and she quickly made the transaction. The program's account was updated and we had made about $900,000 leaving us at about 4.5 million dollars.

As I was musing over the base's finances I was interrupted by a phone call. "Commander Anya Snow?" The voice asked.

"Yes, speaking." I replied as I tried to place the unfamiliar voice.

"Long time no talk commander. I hope your duties have brought you much success." The way the voice put emphasis on my title, it could only be Bladestar.

"They must be, I'm commander of a top secret program now, you wouldn't believe what we're up to." I replied, keeping my voice relaxed like the call was not such a big deal.

"Oh really? Can I get a hint at what you're doing or where you are?" He asked with a hint of a smile. He had always been good at being creepy as a joke. Like the time he sneaked a hatchet onto base and pretended to be an axe murderer.

"Oh you know I can't give out that kind of information over the phone with someone I haven't seen in years. I had my team get a hold of you so we could bury the old hatchet/ I have an opportunity for you." I forced the vision of black skinned corpses festering in piles out of my mind.

Jack Bladestar did not respond at first. "Why Anya, you're not the one who usually compromises. Last I heard you were still quite angry at me. Is it possible the mighty Snowdrifter has finally warmed up?" I can hear his smugness through the phone.

"Just come for a meeting, when I'm done you can accept or refuse my offer. You wouldn't want some moron taking your rightful spot would you? Besides, what are you up to now? Are you comfy behind a desk in some basement somewhere or are you between northern Russian surveillance ops?" I teased back.

"I'll come, if only so I can see where you've ended up, tomorrow. I don't really think your willing to put up with me and my attitude again." His sentence ends with a click as he hangs up. I closed my eyes and leaned back in my chair. Was I really going to put up with him? If he didn't accept, would I be able to find a suitable replacement. He may be a cold blooded tactician who would quicker count numbers than strive to reach the optimal result, but he still knew me and the way I did things better than anyone. To few commanders would put themselves in their foot soldier's boots except me and him.

I went back to my finances and tried to think out what I would do with them. I managed to decide on hiring an additional 10 engineers while I waited for the two hangers at the listening posts to be done. That in addition to the cost of two new Interceptors would be 1.7 million dollars, leaving the program with about 2.8 million dollars. Assuming the meeting at the month went well. The thought left me with an instant headache.

The next day Jack arrived on base, escorted by two X-Com operatives. I met with him at the entrance dressed in my full uniform.

"Welcome to the X-Com base lieutenant commander. Allow me to show you around." I stated firmly. I looked over Jack, he had not changed since I last saw him. Built like a truck, he stood at a solid six foot five with arms that would make a gorilla jealous. His hair was short and black as night and his eyes were steel blue, cold and calculating.

"X-Com you say? The same X-Com as seen on TV by field reporters covering this "alien invasion" crap?" He asked in disappointment.

"While they are attacking the odd city, they haven't begun their invasion yet. At least we don't think so." I replied smugly. "Why don't I show you the UFO's we've recovered so far?"

I proceeded to show him around the base. Going over all the alien artifacts we had recovered and even some of the live specimens. We continued to the hangers where I explained that we had the best aircraft not yet available to the world's militaries. While on tour however I was called to the command center.

"Commander, we detected a medium sized UFO over southern Russia heading west at 4300kt/h." The radar tech's assistant reported.

"Scramble Interceptor 2. I think we'll need more firepower than usual tonight." I replied as I moved to my command console. "Someone get the lieutenant commander a chair please." I commanded as I brought up a screen on the UFO's location.

As the pilot made it's way across the world to it's target, I showed Jack the different programs and systems at the command console.

"This is way more advanced than what you and I used before. So this isn't really a hoax? Aliens are attacking the earth?" He asked in surprise.

"I know how you feel, I didn't believe it either, until the first couple casualties from the field. I need a second in command Jack. I don't trust anyone else to be in charge while I'm not there. But I have one condition." I turned to him and stared him in the eyes. "If you think you're about to make a decision I won't like, you better get me up and my decision on it."

"I'll do it Snowdrifter. How many times do you get a chance to protect the whole world right?" He replied. "Now lets get this show on the road. It appears that UFO has landed in Denmark." He pointed to my screen.

"Scramble the Skyranger, We've got a job to do." I commanded.

TO BE CONTINUED!

Hey everyone, I've been lurking since about page 3; really enjoy the story so far and finally got over myself and thought I'd volunteer for meatgrinder duty.

Name: Neil Stranek
Preferred Weapon: Latest Rifle-sized smallarm, extra grenades. At some point, wouldn't mind a stun launcher.

Character Bio: Neil's defining characteristic is his sense of duty to his teammates. As an ex-French Legionnaire, he often volunteered for dangerous assignments if it meant other members of his squad would be out of immediate danger. The same holds true for his X-Com assignments. UFO breaches, scouting duty, are all things he would prefer until/unless he achieves officer status. Would also volunteer for psi-training if his attributes turned out to be high enough.
