I agree with researching laser weapons first. We need better stuff that  can punch through tougher stuff. And one of the main stuff is economy. Laser cannons have the best profit margin of all manufacturable items.
 
Plus, any redshirts that join in the fray can still shock aliens (preferably Sectoid leaders) for us. Plus, it'll still be another while  before alien containment is up and running. The mind probe can wait.

I personally prefer the heavy cannon for it's higher accuracy and damage, that and my experience with the auto cannon has been that of terrible aim. they both have their places, the auto cannon's place was just much closer to the enemy.

Hey, I'd like to get in on this, but not with a ground soldier.

Name: Mac
Position: Interceptor pilot
Weapons preference: Cannons of all types(regular, laser, plasma)

Description:
Mac is the type of pilot who everyone hates but wants to be.  He's rash, he's aggressive(request to always use an aggressive attack with him), he doesn't like to follow orders, and a plane is just a tool to him.  Though well trained in the art of dogfighting, he hates the extensive use of misses in modern-day warfare.  Taking the enemy down with only the sights in front of him for aiming; that's what Mac loves to do.  And he's surprisingly good at it, too.  He was brought to the attention of X-COM when he saw and shot down a UFO on a regular military patrol, against orders, of course.
