As the Skyranger approached the structure he could make out figures dashing for it's entrance. By the time The drop-ship touched down the area was still and silent. The team scoured the surrounding area for stragglers but found none. They assembled at the front door and breached the interior. Inside they found a relatively simple layout and again no aliens. The interior seemed to lack any importance, there were no computers or equipment to speak of. As Cerapa and Ram 1 were about to call the mission an utter failure Mehmed discovered a concealed lift. The team assembled on the lift and Mehmed activated it. The lift descended underground smoothly and slowly. Once the lift stopped, a small section of it opened up and glowing tiles, similar to the ones in the medium UFO my team had encountered, were visible.
"So how do these things work commander?" Asked Cerapa as the team peered over the hole in the floor.
A few moments pass without a reply. "Commander Anya Snow is not available at the moment, she did send me some information on these things, one moment." Jack replied. "Ok, when you move over these glowing tiles you become as light as the air around you. You are able to
swim through the air as if it were water but without the resistance."
"So how do we get the heavy weapons platform down there to scout?" Cerapa asked as he looked at the remote tank.
"Try pushing it down wards, I assume it should sink." He replied, unsure of the answer.
Mario tentatively drove his tank over the hole in the floor. He noticed a lack of traction as he moved over the gap but his remote tank did not fall through, instead it seemed to sit on-top of the air. Mehmed placed his hands on the mobile armor and pushed it gently downwards. It floated downwards and collided softly with the ground.
"That was weird." Mario commented as he looked around and found that the room below the lift had three exits and that there were no aliens in the immediate area. He turned his attention to the east and moved into the next room. It appeared to be a secondary entrance lift identical to the one he had just come from. Without the help of a solider to move him up the strange floating lift he would not be able to scout it.
Hugh Mann takes out his smoke grenade. "I don't like the sound of those other exits below." He arms the grenade and moves up to the edge of the hole in the floor.
He tosses it onto the floor below and waits for it to deploy.
While the team waited for the smoke grenade to dispense it's life saving smoke, the team gathered around the edge of the opening in the floor, looking at each other with mixed feelings.
The smoke grenade finally began spewing out thick gray smoke which quickly filled the room.
"Time to move out soldiers, I want Dash Gunmetal, Hugh Mann, and Shu Bei to come with me towards the west exit." Ram 1 ordered as he moved into the lift.
"Tamunshin, you and I will cover the south exit while Shigeo Okabe, Roll Fizzlebeef and Archangel follow Mario and watch any blind spots." Cerapa commanded as he followed Ram 1.
As the team began moving down into the hidden alien structure, Mario continued scouting ahead. He quickly discovered a room housing four strange glowing devices. It was not known at the time what they were exactly but the team guessed that they were power generators of some sort.
Shortly after the team finished taking position within the smoke filled room and were ready to advance. It was quiet, they had not seen or heard a single alien yet.
Mario had continued south through the room with the glowing devices and discovered a narrow section that looked like it had not been built up. On one side as well as the ceiling and the floor was roughly carved stone but on the inside there was another section that matched the rest of the base. The inner wall had a small window in it but nothing but more wall could be seen through it. There was however a strange flickering yellow light. He continued along this narrow path to the west until he spotted an alien. It was one of the floating creatures they had been encountering recently.
Mario backed his remote tank up and pointed out the alien's location to the rest of the team. Tamunshin tries to line up a shot but is unable to see the alien. With the floating alien's apparent resistance to explosives, she had armed her heavy cannon with armor peircing rounds instead.
Meanwhile, Shigeo Okabe had moved up through the ceiling of the room to the east of the team's entrance. It appeared to be an identical lift to the one they had descended in. Thankfully it was clear of any hostiles.
Ram 1 moved up carefully to the small window opposite of the door to the west. Inside was a small room with a door on the west side and another of the glowing floor tiles in the center. The space resembled a small elevator.
Dash Gunmetal moved in behind him and breached the door to the south. Inside he found a similar small room with a window to the west.
The alien Mario had spotted moved into the corner of the cavernous path and opened fire at his heavy weapons platform. As he it did so, another alien opened fire at him through the small window to the south. Both aliens moved back out of sight after a few attempts to damage the remote armor. Mario reported gleefully that he had not sustained any damage from the onslaught.
Dash gathered his wits and moved up through the air and onto the floor above. He found an empty narrow hallway to the west with another hole in the floor at a corner that turned the path to the north.
The rest of Ram's team to the west moved into the small room and prepared to join Dash above.
The team to the east moved into ambush positions and prepared to move further. Archangel and Shigeo Okabe moved to setup an ambush position while Mehmed and Roll Fizzlebeef setup a sniper position as well to cover their backs.
Mario continues to head back to where he entered the caverns, turning to the south and continuing southwards. He quickly comes up to another room housing the strange glowing devices the eastern ground team was currently located in. As he moved towards the western exit of the new room he was fired from within the darkness at the edge of his headlights.
The eastern side of the base had been scouted and cleared. Jack Bladestar continued to have the building's map updated and it appeared that the base was taking shape.
"I thought the bright walls would make it easier to spot the aliens in the dim light." Commented Mario. "I don't think that is the case lieutenant commander."
"Team, you'll need to start using your flares, the brightness of the base interior is deceiving, treat this mission as if it were night on the surface." He ordered the ground team as he replayed the footage of the plasma bolts that had just been fired at Mario's tank.
The team began tossing flares down into the hallways they were guarding. It made their presence even more obvious but at least they would see the aliens coming.
Mario pressed forwards until he could see his hidden attacker on his screen. It appeared to be guarding a room.
Mehmed spots an alien to the south that had slipped past Mario, probably through the cavernous path. He opened fire but he had fired too quickly and the laser collided with the glowing device next to Archangel. The device exploded into a ball of flame which extinguished quickly, filling the room with smoke.
Archangel coughs as his lungs and eyes are filled with hot smoke. "Ahhg! Are you trying to kill me Mehmed? Watch your aim!"
"Are you ok Archangel? I'm sorry, I was too trigger happy..." Mehmed replies, embarrassed.
Archangel checks his back with his free hand, finding no pain or bloodied pieces of shrapnel sticking out of his back he replied. "I'm fine, don't do that again!"
"I'm ok too, thanks for asking guys." Interjects Shigeo Okabe, coughing lightly as he tries to brush the smoke from his face.
"Keep your eyes open. We lost sight of the alien Mehmed fired at." Commented Roll Fizzlebeef as he searched for the alien through the thick smoke.
Mario continues to take on plasma fire from the alien. He smiles smugly as the bolts deflect and diffuse harmlessly off his armor. Suddenly a huge, monstrous creature stomps up next to Mario's tank and rams it. Mario's tank tips onto it's left treads before slamming back to the ground. There is no damage to his systems but Mario's nerves seemed to have taken a hit.
"FUCK WHAT WAS THAT!?" He exclaimed.
Upon looking at it he snapped an image of the creature and punched his vehicle into reverse. The monster appeared to have no visible ranged weapons but it was bipedal with no arms and wore metal plates to enhance it's fearsome appearance.
He doubled back to the cavernous pathway and checked along the south western path. He attracted plasma fire from the west. The plasma bolts struck his main camera and rendered him blind for a moment before the secondaries kicked in.
"Mario, get that machine back to the rest of the group. The aliens seem to have found their wits and we'll probably need your armor between them and the soldiers." Jack Bladestar commanded as he looked over the still picture of the fearsome beast he had just encountered.
Mario sped along the east side of the alien structure and into the cavernous path. He spotted the alien that had wandered past Mehmed's range of view, it was blocking his path!
"Permission to open fire lieutenant commander?" Mario asked as he quickly lined up a shot with his turret.
"Granted, open fire!" Jack commanded.
Mario's heavy weapons platform launched a rocket towards the alien but it ducked out of the way. The rocket flew past it and slammed into the wall behind the floating alien, failing to harm it. The alien raises it's weapon and returns fire! It's plasma bolts collided into Mario's turret causing warning buzzers to fill the command center.
"I can't take too much more of these hits lieutenant commander!" Mario exclaimed as he tried to force the turret of his remote tank to rotate, part of it had fused together from the hot plasma.
The alien continued to rip into Mario's armor with it's highly destructive plasma weapon. Mario fought to regain control of his weapons platform before he lost it completely.
With his HUD flashing red and all his systems beginning to fail he adjusted his turret without the aid of his targeting system and opened fire. His rocket flew gracefully, unaffected by the failing tank's condition and slammed into the aggressive alien. The resulting fireball knocked the life from the hovering creature before it hit the ground.
"Get that machine to the entrance room and wait for the team to finish the mission. It's in no shape to continue Mario." Jack commanded.
Mario proceeded slowly towards the entrance. "Yes sir." The tone of disappointment was evident in his voice.
Meanwhile, Hugh Mann and Ram 1 move down into another small room with a window, door and glowing floor tile. Hugh Mann looked outside the door and found himself in a hallway intersecting the hallway that Archangel and Shigeo Okabe were gurading. He decided to trap the intersection with a proximity grenade to take out any would-be ambushers from behind.
Hugh Mann armed the Grenade and tossed it perfectly. It landed square in the middle of the intersection and nothing should have been able to pass it without setting it off. His throw was witnessed by other-worldly eyes however and a plasma bolt was sent in response. It flew right past Hugh Mann and slammed into the wall just past him.
While he had been trapping the intersection the rest of the breach team continued to search and clear the strange two floor passage. Around the corner was a third hole in the floor which Dash Gunmetal moved down into. the second floor hallway was shaped like a "U" with four holes in the floor total, one at each corner. The eastern most section of the first floor was blocked off by a solid rock wall. Apparently the alien structures are modular.
An alien then moved out of cover and into the view of Tamunshin and Cerapa. It opened fire but missed it's mark. Cerapa managed to quickly return fire, striking the alien in the chest. The explosion destroyed the nearby flare and plunged the area into darkness but once the sound of the explosion subsided the alien's death shreik could be heard, followed by a thud as it hit the ground.
Once Mario was past them, Mehmed, Archangel, Shigeo Okabe and Roll Fizzlebeef began advancing slowly.
Shigeo carefully moved around the edge of the intersection that Tamunshin and Cerapa were guarding and spotted a floating alien.
He fired a couple laser blasts but failed to hit his target before moving back behind his cover. Archangel Quickly popped out of cover after a second and spotted a second alien behind the first! They appeared to be trying to figure out how to assault Cerapa and Tamunshin's position.
Archangel raised his rifle and took aim. He managed to hit the first alien in the arm but failed to take it down.
He joined Shigeo Okabe in taking cover before the alien's had a chance to return fire. They waited for a few moments before Archangel moved to take another shot but this time he spotted a different alien.
"What the hell is that thing? Some sort of giant, two legged pig monster!" He commented as he raised his rifle again, firing at the creature three times. His lasers hit the creature solidly but they failed to take the monstrosity down.
He pulls back as the creature recoiled from the super heated wounds now sizzling in it's flesh. Shigeo Okabe moves to finish it off but spots one of the floating aliens hiding behind the corner of the winding passageway.
Tamunshin and Shigeo Okabe opened fire at the new target. Tamunshin landed a hit but failed to take it out. Shigeo Okabe managed to get in the killing blow before moving back behind cover.
As Archangel prepared himself to round the corner and take out the stunned larger alien, He noticed a floating alien hover undisturbed over the proximity grenade.
"Breach team, you have a hostile approaching from the south. The proximity grenade you used didn't go off!" He warned the other group as the alien disappeared into the northern hallway.
Archangel moved out of cover again and quickly spotted the larger alien again. It was snorting loudly and stomping on the ground in rage. Archangel lines up his shot and fires at the creature, striking it in the leg. It falls to it's huge knee and roars in pain, shaking the nerves of everyone who can hear the beast.
"Argh! Enough of this bullshit!" Yells Shigeo Okabe as he jumped from cover and opened fire on the wounded alien beast. A laser caught it in the snout causing it to yank it's head up skyward to howl again. Shigeo Okabe's second shot caught the creature in the throat and silenced it's wailing forever.
"Thank you for killing that thing guys, I don't think I'm gonna be sleeping on the way back." Commented Roll Fizzlebeef as he shook his head, trying to stop his nerves from tingling.
The breach team meanwhile had mostly moved into the north western most room and waited for the alien behind them to catch up. Dash Gunmetal volunteered to setup an ambush position on the second floor hallway. After a few moments he could hear the alien's tell tale hovering as it approached the north western hole right above the rest of the breach team. Dash waited until he saw it's pink, alien skin round the corner then squeezed his trigger. The alien never knew what hit it.
The rest of the breach team moved out of the small room they were waiting in and moved to the west. They found that the hallway came to an intersection. To the north there was an alcove with a solid rock wall in it, the edge of the alien structure. To the south was a long dark hallway and to the west was a very dark room. Shu Bei, Ram 1 and Hugh Mann decided to guard the hallway while Dash Gunmetal, the one most comfortable in the dark, moved slowly into the dark room. A cavernous room filled with strange alien plants and fungus was all that awaited him inside the room. The roomed smelled a mix of exotic flowers and rotting plant life, it made Dash's nose curl.
Shigeo Okabe and Archangel continued to poke in and out of cover, hoping to catch more aliens off guard. Mehmed and Roll Fizzlebeef took up position on the eastern most side of the circular cavernous passageway, guarding the over-watch team from a rear attack. Shigeo Okabe spotted an alien after a few moments of peeking around the corner.
He raised his rifle and placed a perfectly aimed shot at the alien. The laser struck the alien in it's metallic core and it exploded into a small ball of shrapnel.
After waiting for a minute and seeing no alien activity, the team began advancing slowly again. Dash Gunmetal and Ram 1 move south through the strange cavernous room and into an equally strange wide open room with purple floor tiles. The floor tiles were not lit but the room was filled with a flickering mixture of blue, purple and yellow light supplied by the wall panels. After watching them for a few moments, Ram 1 and Dash found themselves growing headaches.
Cerapa moved over to where the proximity grenade was. He knew that even though the aliens could hover over things, the proximity grenade should have gone off anyways. He picked up a few pieces of shrapnel and tossed them at the grenade. After several throws and even knocking the grenade over he cautiously approached the explosive. He picked it up carefully and and examined it. It had been activated and it's proximity detector was working but the damn thing was a dud!
I'm going to have to have a word with Manny when I get back to base..." Cerapa commented darkly as he deactivated the grenade.
Meanwhile both Roll Fizzlebeef and Tamunshin spotted aliens in the south western corner of the cavernous passageway. A fire fight ensued between the two sides. Tamunshin and Roll Fizzlebeef both opened fire at their targets but only Roll managed a hit. The aliens returned fire before dodging for cover. Roll Fizzlebeef managed to avoid the enemy plasma fire but Tamunshin nearly fell victim to one. She managed to repeat the trick she displayed in her previous mission and deflected the plasma bolt with her heavy cannon.
Cerapa, Hugh Mann and Shu Bei advance towards the south and come across a more natural looking section of caves, filled with the alien plant-life that Dasha and Ram 1 had discovered. They were hit with the same strong odors and found it very difficult to see anything.
The aliens Roll Fizzlebeef and Tamunshin had just been fighting moved back out of cover for another attempt to break Tamunshin and Roll's positions. Tamunshin emptied her clip in an attempt to take the alien down but managed to strike it only once, failing to kill the vile creature before it fired back and moved back behind cover. The alien's plasma bolt soared just over Tamunshin's shoulder and struck the wall behind her. Tamunshin decided to take cover herself while she reload her heavy cannon. Roll Fizzlebeef had better luck though and managed to take his target down before it could get a round off.
Cerapa found a narrow passage through the cavern and decided to carefully move through it. Part way into it he spotted the alien Tamunshin had been fighting, taking cover just ahead.
He rasied his weapon but found the narrow passage to be too cramped to line up his shot!
Instead he moved slowly and quietly through the narrow passage way so that he could get a better shot at the alien.
Meanwhile, at the south eastern corner of the alien structure, Mehmed prepared a flare. He was flanking the last hallway Mario had scouted when he had to turn back. He moved out into the hallway to throw his flare when a plasma bolt flew towards him for the darkness!
He ducked back into cover and caught his breath, He had just watched his life flash before his eyes. Calming himself he grabbed his rifle and waited for a few moments. He dashed back out of cover and tossed the flare down the hallway as he continued moving for the other wall's cover.
Cerapa ducked into cover as he watched, undetected, another alien join the one currently fighting Tamunshin. The moved towards Tamunshin slowly.
Before Cerapa could act, Tamunshin popped out of cover and fired her cannon at the nearest alien, Shattering it's skull with a well placed shot.
The other alien panicked and rushed to the east for cover before Cerapa could ambush it. It fled roght over the corpse of another floating alien where it was met with a high powered laser, courtesy of Roll Fizzlebeef. The alien collapsed to the ground atop it's fallen ally and joined it in it's eternal slumber.
Dash Gunmetal and Ram 1 had been advancing while the firefight was taking place and had stumbled upon another series of the strange multi-story passageways. They began carefully clearing them.
As Cerapa was moving into position to ambush Tamunshin's attackers, he failed to watch his own flank. An alien surprised him from the south and fired several plasma bolts at him. He caught them in his arm and shoulder and yelled out in pain. Before the alien could get in anymore shots however Cerapa used his good arm to smack the alien away with his auto-cannon.
"H-Help!" Cerapa shouted in a painful stammer. "OH GOD IT BURNS!" He screamed as the accelerate particles in his arm started their chain reaction in his arm, fueling it's fire with his skin and muscle tissue.
Hold on sergeant!" Archangel replied as he moved out of cover and spotted the alien to the south. It was wobbling as it hovered back upright.
Archangel quickly took aim and fired his rifle, ending the damned alien's life.
"Man down! We need a med-kit over here!" Archangel called out over the radio as Jack frantically searched through the ground team's load-outs.
"Hugh Mann, your closest. Get that med-kit over there asap!" He called out over the radio.
Hugh Mann looked across the cavern to Shu Bei, holding up his med-kit, he motioned for Shu bei to catch it.
Hugh Mann threw the med-kit over to Shu Bei and he ran through the previously cleared section of the cavern over to Cerapa who was slowly and painfully retreating through the narrow part of the cave he had snuck through. Shu Bei pulled open the med-kit and had a look at Cerapa's wounds.
Cerapa's arm was badly damaged and he was losing blood fast. The plasma burn was spreading painfully. Shu Bei worked vigorously to douse the plasma fire and patch up the burns. He managed to stop the bleeding and administered a pain killer and stimulant to keep him conscious.
"There you go sergeant, all better." Shu Bei patted Cerapa on the back gently and helped him to his feet.
"I'll head to the entrance for now... I can hardly see straight... Thanks rookie." Cerapa staggered a bit but slowly made his way back to the entrance to join Mario's damaged tank.
Ram 1 and Dash Gunmetal, meanwhile, had finished clearing the section of paths they were in and were ready to continue moving south.
Roll Fizzlebeef and Tamunshin turn their attention to the large room inside the circular cavern. They breach the door and find that the interior is split into two paths circling yet another interior room. The outer walls of this passageway are filled with the same flickering yellow tiles that twisted and pulsed. Looking at them for any amount of time caused visual and mental strain.
Shigeo Okabe met up with Mehmed and assaulted the small room that lay between them. The room had an entrance to the east and windows to the north, west and south. In the center was one of the red pulsing tiles that allowed travel between floors. Neither of them had spotted the alien that had been guarding the entrance. Shigeo Okabe and Mehmed looked at the hole in the roof and then to each other.
"I'll go. Be ready to back me up though." Shigeo Okabe stepped up. He was not about to let the bright scientist turned soldier walk into an enemy ambush on his watch.
Mehmed nodded and peered out the windows as Shigeo Okabe awkwardly swam up to the next floor. As he reached the hole he could see the hole was flanked on all four sides by large containers. He moved up along one, grabbing it to pull himself up. After a quick tug he sent himself up all the way and came face to face with a drowning girl!
"F-FUCK!" He yelled out as his eyes went wide, The hair stood up on the back of his neck. He noticed after a moment that the girl was dead, her eyes frozen open in terror and her dark black skin faded to a purplish brown. He looked down and noticed that past her shoulders all that remained of her was her spine.
The image was too much and Shigeo had to advert his gaze before he lost his lunch. He turned to his right and gazed into another container that was storing something or someone. He could not identify what it was or used to be.
"You ok up there Shigeo? Is there an alien up there?" Mehmed called up.
Shigeo closed his eyes and shook his head, trying to stop hearing the girl, he saw, screaming in his head for help. "N-No I don't think so. If there was I'm sure it would have shot me by now. D-Do yourself a favor and don't come up here." He swallowed his disturbed feelings and focused on the mission, he was here to stop this kind of madness. He forced himself to look through the other two containers to check the remaining corners. There was a container with a intact human skeleton in it. The last container held the lungs of some slightly larger than human creature, or perhaps they were bloated from the liquid filling the tanks.
Shigeo Okabe rejoined Mehmed, a shaken man.
The rest of the team converged in the south west corner of the alien structure. The building had been successfully cleared and all that remained was the central room that Tamunshin and Roll Fizzlebeef were advancing on.
Tamunshin and Roll Fizzlebeef slowly made their way through the narrow passage. Meeting up on the far side. They flanked another large door and prepared a breach while the rest of the team caught up.
Tamunshin and Roll Fizzlebeef breach the door and check the room's corners. Inside was the same purple floor tiles Ram 1 and Dash gunmetal had come across to the west. Lining the edges of the room were more of the pulsing devices seen in the east and south east sections of the alien structure and new large containers filled with a yellow liquid. In the center of the room was a large array of the glowing red tiles, coupled with an equally large hole in the roof.
Together, Tamunshin and Roll crept along the walls and took cover behind the liquid containers, keeping their eyes peeled on the hole in the roof.
Tamunshin peered around the container through the hole in the roof and spotted an alien in the darkness above. It was waiting patiently for one the ground team soldiers to foolishly float up into it's cross-hairs. Tamunshin moved back behind cover and whispered through the radio. "Lets get back to that door. We need to approach this differently..."
She and Roll Fizzlebeef quietly and carefully moved back to the room's entrance and waited for the rest of the team to arrive.
Dash Gunmetal, Ram 1, Shigeo Okabe and Archangel gathered outside the door with Tamunshin and Roll Fizzlebeef. They conversed amongst each-other the best way to tackle the situation.
"Well first thing we can all agree on is the need for a smoke screen." Shigeo stated as he pulled out his smoke grenade.
The others nodded and agreed that the best way to start any of their plans was by reducing the enemy's field of vision. Shigeo pulled the pin and tossed the grenade inside.
The grenade quickly dispensed the smoke and obscured the area. "Ok now that's a big opening to tackle. Why don't we try a proximity grenade?" Offered Ram 1. The rest of the team agreed that it was worth a shot and a whole lot better than rushing up there to meet them face to face.
Ram 1 armed his proximity grenade and cautiously moved through the smoke. He spotted one of the aliens above. He tossed the proximity grenade up next to it and moved quickly back to safety.
The team waited with abated breath. Then a minute went by, then a second minute went by and no explosion sounded.
"Unbelievable! another dud? Worthless gadgets..." Ram 1 fumed.
"Look there is only one way to get them all in one go and it's with one of these." Archangel stated as he pulled out his high explosive charge. "Any objections?" He asked smugly as each of the soldiers present looked at the deadly device. No one said a thing. "Good, now to get it up there." Archangel trailed off as he started punching in a countdown timer into the device.
He moved through the smoke as it began to dissipate. He caught the attention of one of the aliens waiting in ambush. He tossed the heavy explosive up into the room above and began running for the exit.
As he reached the door the alien caught the explosive with it's face. The timer quickly ticked down to zero and instantly vaporized the aliens above, igniting the room in a hellish fireball. The explosion shook the entire base and set off several secondary explosions within the room above. A wave of hot fire poured out from the hole in the roof above and chased Archangel out of the room.
"I don't want to meet the alien that manages to survive that kind of firepower." Ram 1 comments as the explosion quickly disperses and leaves tell tale scorch marks on the ground.
They moved up into the room above and found nothing but carnage. The clean up crew had a ball sifting through that mess.
